Question for those with more than one Valk

I'm currently in discussions to maybe acquire a second Valkyrie. This has me excited, but also worried. You see, for almost 18 years now I've been a one Valk man, me and mine have a pretty good relationship. Sure, we have the occasional fight or squabble, but we work things out and keep on going.

For those who've had a long term relationship with a single Valkyrie, and then moved to a more open relationship with a second (Or more) Valk in the household, did your original one get jealous? Start having problems?

I'm worried when and if this happens, I'll come home after taking the newer Valk for a ride and find a puddle of oil or something, or even worse, she'll get mad and try to leave me on the side of the road or something, maybe try to leave me for a younger man?

  I've enjoyed this problem over the years with 2 Valkyrie's or Goldwing and my Interstate. Lately my new to me 2009 Goldwing wins the question "which to drive" a lot more than I like to admit. Love both my current bikes and don't see any jealousy yet.

Based on my personal experience, if they are of the same relative age and mileage you should most likely be ok. If the "other Valkyrie" is a newer and sexier model with less miles you could be stepping into a mine field.

You would do well to remember and heed the cautionary tale of "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned."

Lol...my thinking exactly....always thought of myself as a one bike/one woman kind of man, never having a real strong desire for another. I often wonder however, what it would be like to play around with another that offers something of a different kind of experience or excitement ( oh BTW...I'm talking about the Bike here, not the Woman )

Another Valk (Standard) to play around with and modify would be fun, as would an adventure/tour bike like a Triumph Tiger. After 16 and a half years though, I wonder if I would feel guilty leaving my trusty old Interstate in the garage while tooling around on another bike....and would she continue to make the same effort to keep me upright and get me trouble-free to my destinations as she has done all these years?

IF you should ever go into their shared cave and you find tins and chrome lying about everywhere and vital fluids drippin Then and ONLY THEN build a 2nd sperate cave so you can enjoy either one at Your leisure. My Brothers standard/tour and my I/S-my is newer and also has more miles-have shared caves here and in Illinois and parking spaces in a Lot of different locales. Neither one has yet hurt the other-YET.   And unless it is a California bike you should be good!   RIDE SAFE.

Sometimes it works in your favor like INZANE this year for me.  I had just did the hillbilly ride and and had some wires (trailer wires) got into my rear tire and tore up my rear wiring harness on KEEPER and could not get the new one in time so i jumped on HOBO and took her instead. The two (VALKS) i left at home was ok with that because they know there time will come and they all play nice together.

When I bought my 14 Valk I did not want to sell my 01 Valk. So for awhile I had them both, partly an emotional decision and partly I wanted a bit of variety. Well as time went on I was more prone to riding the 14 and still did not want to get rid of the 01. Well about a year and half later it was time to part with the 01 since I was not riding it. I like you was concerned about stale fuel and problems. I put some gas preservative in it started it once in awhile and had a new battery in it and it never gave one bit of problem. Cleaned and polished it and kept it in really good shape which didnt take to much to do. It is and was to me a great bike and learning experience and the guy I sold it to brings it to me to take care of. I have no regrets and it gave me time to part softly and it was a good decision.

You will find as time goes on which one you favor.

I have been a mostly one at a time guy.  My wife says as soon as I can ride 2 at a time, I can buy another one.

However, for a time I did have 2 as I "repossessed" my son's Tourer when he abused it (didn't ride it, didn't clean it, disrespected the Lady) and tried to split time between the Tourer and my Interstate.  But it just didn't work.  After a while, I just went back to the Interstate and the Tourer was neglected, although it was in a nice, safe and dry garage.  The tank rusted, the carbs gummed up and it took 3 days for Big BF to bring it back to life.  After that, my son realized his errors and now rides it regularly, although I make him keep it in my garage so it is safe and dry.  I start it up every couple of days just to make sure all is well.

So, I won't have 2 bikes just to myself in the future.  Once I decide on another bike, my Valk will have to go.  It's one of the few restrictions I have from my spousal unit and in my mind, it makes sense.

To each their own and if you get the 2nd Valk, I hope you enjoy it.  But take a look at that dusty ST1300 in your garage first as I'm sure it has to go if you get the 2nd Valk.

Yup, the only way financially I can swing a second Valk right now will be to trade the ST1300 for it. The ST is a great bike, it's just too small for me for any distance. I love getting on it and zoom-zooming onto the freeway near my, but any distance it's just painfully uncomfortable for me.

As our beloved Valks are getting older and some parts are taking longer to get, I've been toying with the idea of a 2nd so I could (almost) always have one operational between them.

To be honest, I hardly ever ride my Standard. I should have sold it when I got my I/S. But it had sentimental value and I didn't. Now I'm thinking I'll just hang on to it. It's a good bike and they are not pulling much money these days.

The fact it's 18 years old and parts are hard to find really haven't become an issue for me as of yet.  I would go out and ride across the country today on the I/S with no concerns.  With proper maintenance, they will run forever.  Just look at Ali.

Two is great.  

Regardless of model, parts interchangeability is huge.  You can swap bikes if one is acting up or broke, and you can swap parts between them to keep one up and running.  

Old touring bikes are cheaper to insure, and I only carry low liability and uninsured anyway. (And never been sorry)

I always have a front tire, battery (dry), Ujoint, wheel bearings, petcock coverset rebuild kit, oil and filters, and other odds and ends on hand (OK for one, better for two).

I swap bikes every few months, primarily to keep all 12 carbs ungummed, with pure gas in the lady in waiting.  I always wash and clean (and cover) the bike going into hibernation (I'm sure you love this idea  ).

I don't have a garage but a 10 X 12 shed, so the one hibernating has to be crammed over on one side of the shed as tight as possible, otherwise I'd swap them out much more often.

There is no jealousy between bikes.  They are like Uncle Remus' old tar baby..... she just sit there and ain't say nuthin'.

My only drawback is that I'd really almost always ride one (supervalk) than the other (trunk bike).  The trunk bike has only half the miles, and is in much less aging paint, chrome, dings, wear and tear condition.  Even though I thought having the trunk bike for trips would be best, I don't ride it on trips (except up to see family).  I've even given thought to converting it to a permanent supervalk also so I'd ride it more. (I never take passengers)  That seems stupid and I'm not doing it.

So, when choosing a 2d Valk, don't end up with two where you really only want to ride one all the time anyway.... for whatever reason.

I was a lone-Valk owner from 2003-2007 and me and my 2003 Standard racked up about 38,000 miles.  In 2007 I bought an Interstate and my new two-up bike (along usually with my wife) racked up 27,000 miles in a year and a half.  Then in 2008 the Goldwing came along.  I got rid of the Interstate, but kept the Standard.  

Well, most of my riding turned out to be with my wife so the Standard sat a lot.  I finally sold it two months ago with 48,000 miles on it.  10,000 miles in 10-11 years was enough neglect (not to mention the thousands in depreciation of the bike).  

If your situation is just which bike will YOU ride and it's generally apples to apples the sharing time/miles will probably work, but if you're buying one with more comfort features you might as well pick one.

I have three valks, my first is a tourer, two interstates, one I'm in the process of bobbing out, kept all extras for the remaining interstate including a complete fairing and Ernie schuster set of exhausts and trunk and any other take offs .. I ride all of them alternatively, everyone has a different feel and for specific distances/ events. All customized to my liking. No jealousy between them and no regrets for me

I'm pretty sure my Standard is quicker and sportier. So far my knees, hips, balance, and strength have been good. But I can see the day when the Standard could become my everyday bike. And then back to canvas bags for trips. Maybe just pull a trailer.

as someone said do not get 2 Valks the same thing like 2 interstates or 2 standards.  I have an I/S quiet stock exhaust and last November picked up Reb's old 98 blue/cream LOUD tourer for a decent price.  I switch back and forth enjoy both but my go-to bike is still the less mileage I/S for it has a radio/mp3 player and quiet pipes longer distance rides is nice, but for jaunting around locally to make some NOISE,  the 98 is my pick.  I got the 98 LOUD cobra exhaust up to on Monday 75 mph consistently and that LOUD exhaust got on my nerves big time but if under 65 mph is not too loud and tolerable.

For my kid and I, we have 5 cycles in both our eyes one too many really should sell one now that he bought his yamaha fjr1300 to replace the 97 honda magna.

While my IS is usually set up for two, I can super valk it in less than 10 minutes. That is ALWAYS the ride for 300 plus miles. The Tourer has become the local ride and while she sees more of me, never gets the quality time the IS gets. So far I have not noticed any new scratches on either when they share the barn. I have noticed the truck sleeps outside a lot lately and the Norton seems to fear the dark.
