Got some of my life back today

My gosh, about 8 months ago I was told by the gastroenterologist to knock off ALL Nsaids.

As a result, my knees gradually started complaining more and more. In the last 3 months, they started interfering with my life. Yes, i know bad knees aren't even close to what some are going through but still.

It got to a point where I didn't want to go to a restaurant unless the tables were bolted down so that I could use them to get up.  It got to a point where I was wondering if I could stand up in church (thanks for anchored pews). It got so that I had to invite my neighbor over to my apt since he didn't have chairs with arms in them. It got to a point where I had ordered a rifle scope for my Henry "Evil Roy" .22 mag rifle but just didn't feel like installing it. Shooting at the outdoor range became almost too much because of the walk over uneven ground. In short, Hell, even my attitude changed. I got pissed over little things ,got mad at myself because I had to make a BIG production out of just standing up. Sleep gone to Hell because of the pain, no NSAIDS, and won't take narcotics or use a walker,OR replace the knees.

Finally bit the bullet.Stubbornly I held off but went to the Ortho doc yesterday. My bone on bone knees were evident on Xrays as they were three years ago. I reluctantly agreed to start the regimen with cortisone shots in both knees.  Other option will be tried as needed.

Today, my pain is reduced, my better attitude is back, my energy is back. I ordered a recumbent exercise bike to replace the walking that I've quit doing.    Heck, i might even ride Chris's Scrambler and have him videotape me so that You'll know that I can still ride. Now that might be too ambitious but WTH it might be worth trying at 90.

The doc also made my day.  He said that I look like I'm 70 instead of 90.  Of course he can't see inside unless he gets Xrays.

Added thought:  I really LOL when I see the famous saying about riding a helluva ride and then die.  That would be based on good genes, good lifestyle, and extra, extra, good luck.  How many can say that. I can't.

Any way, the sun is shining. When i get my accumulated chores done. I will take the Miata out and destroy the few curves here in Allen county Indiana.

Glad to hear things are getting better, another thought - check with the gastroenterologist to see if occasional NSAID use would be acceptable if you took a proton pump inhibitor along with it. (Prilosec, Prevacid, etc)

Because of my gastric bypass surgery I was initially told I'd have to give up NSAID permanently as well due to the risk of ulcers in the blind stomach, but because of multiple herniations in my lower back, the bariatric surgeon said it'd be okay for me to occasionally take Ibuprofen (Just not 4 at a time 5 times a day like I was previously doing) as long as I take a proton pump inhibitor the same day to clock the risk of ulcers from the NSAID.

(I'm not a doctor, don't act on what I say without checking with a real doctor, etc. etc. etc...)

But regardless, glad you're getting some relief! Pain hurts!

I'm already taking a proton pump inhibitor (Protonix) and the orthopedic Doc said if pain comes back to take Advil for five days straight only and double the Protonix.

I don't like to take naprosen(Aleve)  as it can make my asthma not so good. Your advice is right on even with no degree

I would like to take one of the Valks out but both have the rocker gear shift , couldn't get uses to it.
Also not sure if I would trust myself on Marks Valk if my knee gave way at a stop. Scratch his bike and I'd never hear the last of it

          Then go look for one of those older Honda Dreams!  You know which one I'm talkin bout. Thinkin it was either a 90CC or 125CC one lunger. RIDE SAFE.

I know I'm shooting for Wayne's goal, heck I'm hoping to live that long. So far....so good.   I'm hoping the VA comes through with Aid and Attendance I recently applied for, would give me some daily breaks so I can get some riding in again.

John, I never heard of that program. Is it help with caregiving?  If so, you definitely could use it  with all the years of attending your loved one.

I wish that we were living closer so that we could reenact sitting on a balcony reviewing life's problems over a cold scotch and soda.
