What was wrong with the '99's?  My '97 has 120+ on it with zero problems.

 A 97 with 120k and the original petcock one can only assume you are in an area that doesn't sell ethanol gas!  I had to replace mine on my 98' recently and it was in bad shape I was lucky not to have damaged the motor when it hydro-locked!

Nope rin ethanol all the time. Never touch the petcock.havent since day one. 21 yrs and no trouble.

1999 p/n 16950-MBY-003, superceded to 16950-MBY-013, then -023, and now -033.
2003 p/n 16950-MZO-033

The illustration appears to be unchanged.

OK Rattie.... this 'newbie' will 'bite'......what changed?

Co-incidence , have just been looking for a cover set and there are 2 part numbers. The years listed are all over the place (Partzilla's parts lists have the years they suit). Bit of a mix and match.

I ordered both petcocks so we will find out next week when they come in.

Honda Line Direct parts lists have the superceded numbers, they all update to 16950-MZO-033 and cover set to 16953-MBZ-B51.
Differences? who knows. The question would be if the latest cover set will work with earlier petcocks

I've read awful things about the OEM petcocks but I just rebuilt the petcock on my 1997 only because it was going on 22 years and hydrolock sucks. But the petcock didn't need it. It still worked normally. I guess the 97s really were better

I think that over time Honda gets parts from different manufacturers and the different part number reflects that.

I have often wondered on the petcock issue if the ones going bad belong to owners who constantly switch to the off position or and wait to turn on reserve before refueling?
the ball in the petcock travelling back and forth does damage the o ring.

On Deerslayer, my high mileage 98, I installed a Dan-Mark around '98 and never change it from the ON position unless I need reserve.  It has the OEM petcock.  So the vacuum shutoff and the solenoid both shut the fuel off and if the vacuum fails I don't care.  I have since changed the wiring of the Dan Marc so it is powered by a latch relay powered by the kill sw output that must be tripped on by a hidden push button or the fuel remains off.  So the fuel goes off if the ignition or the kill sw are off, or the bike is tipped over.  Wiring described at http://www.horseapple.com/Valkyrie/Tech_Tips/Fuel_Shutoff/fuel_shutoff.html
