When the earthquake hit

The emperor has no clothes

My Mom is in Alaska visiting my brother and my sister and grandkids. After I heard about the quake I called her to see how everyone was. Haven't heard from my sister yet, but everybody appears to be ok. My Mom has been thru many of these things and is pretty level headed about what to do. But she was telling me when it started she was going to the bathroom. She said the glass shower doors next to her were clanging and banging so bad, she thought they would shatter on her. So she's struggling to get up and out pulling her pants up with the house rocking like it was in 20' seas. She made it out to the living room with her pants still around her knees as my brother and his wife come out of their bedroom.
I guess the highways are closed due to collapsed overpasses. She was supposed to fly out today, but I think that will be delayed a few days.

The images from cameras in businesses, homes, and highways show some significant damage.
Some homes on fire, collapsed bridges and roadways, power out.  Anchorage airports closed.
Aftershocks.  Looks pretty devastating.

No reports on loss of life as of yet; hope there is none.  Wishing your family to be safe. :)

My wife's niece lives in Fairbanks; nothing happened up there except for a small tremble according to her text.

I hope your entire family there is ok.  The news sounds like it was a rough one!

Everybody is well and accounted for. Just talked to my sister a little bit ago. Seeing some of the road damage, it's amazing nobody was injured. Thanks Jerry  :cooldude:

Your wife's niece is pretty tough. Fairbanks is not for wimpy people. Although they rarely get much in the way of earthquakes.

She and her husband own a welding and fabrication shop there, he is a master welder.  Likes to construct and repair those aluminum jet river boats.  He built one for them that they haul to Valdez to fish.  Big time hunter (annual moose), trapper, and bush rat.  They moved sight unseen as newlyweds 15 years ago and have never looked back.  Great kids.  I think their cabin is in Fox.  Check out their work in their photo gallery.  If you ever need their services.

Thanks everyone for your concerns  :cooldude: As far as I can determine all friends and family are fine. Some slight damage to homes, but nothing severe. As to my mom's britches scenario, I'm not sure when she got em up and how traumatized my brother will be from it. But, I'm sure the addition of a family tale has been added to.
It's strange seeing pics and videos of roads tore up that I learned to ride a Suzuki 90 on 46 years ago. Alaskans are a resourceful people. They will get thru this just fine. I'm glad it didn't happen in February at -25* though.

How well does road repair work at -25 ?

Or will they just grade off dirt roads until it's warm enough ?

Not very well. But it's not near that cold yet. I'm not sure what they will do with some of those roads yet. Some that I've seen looks like the ground liquefied in the shaking and sunk in. You know how the government works. They will likely need to "study" it for a year before they do anything.

And of course form a committee first to do a study...

In California I learned it was really stupid to have a big picture/painting with a glass cover above the bed.

When it fell and shattered, just behind the headboard, in the middle of the night, no one was injured, but we needed cleaner sheets.
