I was just looking through some old pics and began to wonder...How many of us have one of these?  Of course, mine was done on my Magna, prior to getting the Valkyrie.  Does that mean I have to do it again on my Valkyrie?

Prior, there was a "Thousand in One". Same concept 1000 miles in 24 hours. Do not know how many did it. But there was quite a few. I personally know of 4, 2 of which did it twice.

Another interesting ride is the "Three Flags Classic" sponsored by the Southern California Motorcycle Association. Still going strong after 40+ years. Information is on the Web. The same 4 above also have done the Three Flags Classic.

Then there was the un-official, "4 Corners Rally". Four corners of the USA in 1 year. 2 of the 4 also did that. This name later became associated with 2 other events with different ideas.

All I got was the belt buckle when I did mine.     The last Zanesville event... did Seattle to Zanesville (2,700 miles) in three days, then the return in four days... three days after getting home... did the Saddle Sore 1000 in 18 hrs. 14 mins.  Stopping for dinner was a mistake... got sleepy after the big meal.

On Paper. I had 2 rides certified along with my friends and have made others, like last year's Georgia to California run that I never paid them good money to tell me that my partners and I made it...

Did one of those a long time ago, but never sent in the paper work...   Didn't need to spend that much $$$ on a piece of paper.

Did the 1st one on a 81 GoldWing, this was back when the gal Kneebone run with was still alive.

Did one on my 86 Gold Wing.

Did the 4 corners on a 94 HD FLHCTU, bagger,  just before my bypass and getting the Valk.    Then did the same route on the Valkyrie shortly after being released from the hospital.   I got out of the hospital, went out to my friendly stealer, saw MGM setting there and traded on the spot.   5 days later, MGM & I were on the 4 corners route.   This time I ran it from Iowa to Washington to California to Florida to Maine........ 2 rear tires on this trip.   Then mossed home.

1st real trip on the Valkyrie was to do the 4 corners, and the next one was to get all the state capitals, then all of our 99 County Court houses, and all the towns under 500 population in Iowa..   Still working on this one.  Got about 50 or so of 190+.

Who needs to spend chrome $$$ for a certificate?   I have pictures to back it up so no certificates from Kneebone.

Let's see, I did one in 2003 which I got the paper to prove, a couple more or 6 (2 1500's in 36) in 2004 maybe 2 in 2005, 4 in 06. Maybe one or two just last summer. But I wasn't riding a Magna with a hard ass, I'm sorry I mean an iron butt seat.

Congrats Motomama.  I dont know if you need to do another one on your valk but why not.  We do one every summer up here in alaska for fun.  Thats a good idea from black pearls captin to head up to alaska.  We will be waiting.  Bring good ol willow too.  We made it over 2600 miles trough canada in just three days on our way back from inzane nine and that aint no super slab.  I hope that counts for some ass time in the seat hahahah.

FB and I have had SEVERAL 1000 plus mile days.. 2 up.   no paper work.... it was always the last day of vacation...crap... we gotta get home and back to work!!!!!!!!
  Our friends Chief Runamuck and Beep Beep did a 49 State iron butt run in 11 days!!!!!! 2 up on a harley!!!!!!  Mosts of their days were 1000 miles PLUS!!!!!!!...    Day after day.... not a lot of time to smell the flowers on a trip like that

Rhonda has done 4 riding with me before she started riding her on Valk. On our trip to California in 2004, SS1000 on the first day rode into a SS1500 the next day (1500 in 36 hours. SS1000 coming back rode into a SS1500 the next day.

I have not done 1000 miles in a day...yet.  The farthest I've gone is a little over 800 miles in a day...actually twice a few days apart...from Pittsburgh area to Jacksonville, FL then on to Miami the next day, then back a few days later.  I'm sure I could have pushed on another 200 miles, but I was pretty wore out from the mid-July heat in SC, GA, and FL.  I remember sitting on the highway in SC (I64??) just BAKING in the sun because of a major accident that had traffic backed up for miles.  I ended up getting off at an exit and having a late lunch at a Burger King and a local guy helped me map a route around the traffic...avoiding highways through most of GA all together. 

I left home about 5am and pulled in to the Red Roof Inn in JAX about 7:30pm, averaging 55mph overall.  So I still had plenty of time had I wanted to push on awhile.  But I had motel reservations, so I stayed there. Plus, I had not been logging my gas stops or anything.

On the trip home, I actually completed the last 200 miles after hitting  a small deer in WV near the New River Gorge bridge, which caused bent forks, bent fender, broken windshield, cracked saddlebag, and a host of other small items totalling close to $5000 in damages...not to mention some pretty fried nerves.

OK...just how far have you ridden in a day?  ???

I'm new to distance riding, only had the Valk 9 months. Longest ride so far was to Inzane 9 from the Seattle area. Did 800 one day, could have gone futher, but It was getting dark and riding in deer country. Started seeing fresh road kill and blood stained asphalt and decided to call it a day.

I would be interested in hearing some of your tips for long distance riding. I know...get up early and go like hell.

Later that year I rode 1,985 miles before stopping for the night, but I took thirty-two hours to do it.

At very near twenty-four hours it looked like this.



So actually, the BBG was the furthest I've ridden in twenty-four.

At a little over 1200 miles into that ride I crossed this milestone.

I would be interested in hearing some of your tips for long distance riding. I know...get up early and go like hell.

Actually my advice would be different than some would give.  If you're truly going to ride twenty-four hours I would suggest that you start past mid morning and hold a reasonable pace.

Past mid morning because if you start very early in the morning you'll end up doing the most arduous part of the ride in the dark.  Dark and tired is a bad combination.

Reasonable pace because attempting to ride long at a rapid pace will tire you sooner.  Reasonable, of course, differs some from one rider to the next.

I did the 50CC, coast to coast in 24 hours on a honda CX500 that I purchased for $150.  Gave the thing to a friend in CA and flew home. Years later, I did a 1000 from Chicago to FL on a 1000CC Virago.  At the end of that trip, I picked up my Valk and gave the Virago to my son.  Never did a documented ironbutt trip on the Valk.

Concur.  IF you're riding for 24 hours, as Willow states.  If you're just going for 1000 miles in however long it takes, I would go for the early morning start.  It doesn't truly take 24 hours.  If you start out at daybreak on a midsummer day, you could probably finish before the deer get too thick.  That's how I've done both of my 1000 milers.  Worked out just fine (despite my inability to truly leave at daybreak).
