I will definitely acquiesce to your knowledge of aircraft engines, but from the Wikipedia article about the Continental O-300 engine:

First produced in 1947, versions were still in production as of 2004. It was produced under licence in the United Kingdom by Rolls-Royce in the 1960s.

So, Wikipedia saying Rolls Royce made that engine in the 1960's, and the other article saying it was a Rolls Royce engine from a 60's era aircraft, seems to line up.

Seeing the size of that nacelle/grill makes me realize that one of those shells would make an awesome pull-behind camper.  If I only had the money.....

Some have relocated entire aircraft to the craziest locations and converted to homes and restaurants. I stopped for gas at a place in Oregon 30 years ago that had a B-17 up on supports, as the roof over the pumps.

Continental engines are made by Continental Motors in Mobile Alabama and have been since the '20s.  (Note to Baldo, I've been to the factory - it over near the new Airbus facility and Mobile Aerospace).

I think what the other article was saying is that RR made some Continental engines under license from Continental, just like Buick made some Pratt & Whitney engines under license from P&W during the war (I was working on DC-3 once and the engine had a Buick nameplate on it, which made me look it up).

I knew what it was before I saw it and I'd never seen one before.

Such a unique sound.

I'd jump at the chance to fly a mustang, probably the best fighter ever.

That RR had it all over the Allison.

Engines built under license. Kinda along these lines but different. Studebaker built 60K+ Wright Cyclone R1820's as well the never completed XH-9350. When The National Warplane Museum owned the B-17 Fuddy Duddy I wanted to snatch the plates off 2 of its engines [ Studebaker].

Also, if member serves, Once the P51 switched from Allison to Merlin I think most were fitted with Packards built under license.

They're based not too far from you in Stow, MA. They have quite a busy schedule every year. I've seen them almost every year in either Hyannis or Plymouth.

Their mission is to keep these planes flying, and to educate the public so that they're not forgotten. They do a fantastic job. The planes are always immaculate.

I believe the test flying is part of the shows they have around the country, closest ones in NJ.

I'm going to look into it when I visit the museum.

Simply bizarre! I can't imagine riding one of those cross-country, though... Wonder how long it will be before somebody figures a way to go 'dark-side' with those...? The other photos posted also show the awesome imaginations some folks have! No wonder why I never did so well on an engineering tract in college!!!
