Did my first final drive fluid change around 17k. Being im pushing 50k now thought it my be time again. Drain plug no problems. Fluid came out and looked quite good. After removing the exhaust from the headers to get a good bite on the fill plug. Glass packs r  in the way to do this job without removing the exhaust or at least disconnecting. All is going well except now the fill plug is really seazed in there. I ended up striping the plug so bad even a bolt extractor wont get it out. My last resort is leaning her on the engine gaurd and adding the 5.1oz of fluid thru the drain hole. It worked without any problems. Can anyone think of a reason why this is a bad idea other then obvious half assed nature of doing it this way  :uglystupid2:? Anti seaze is my freind!!!!

pull the rear end to do a full service on the rear end. it's much easier to deal with on a work bench.
I got a rock :(

If you use synthetic gear oil, you can leave the oil in there as long as any tire lasts.....therefore doing what Tank said will be perfect.  Change the lube when the final drive is off the bike.

And another thing.  NO anti sieze on that fill plug, you dont want any of that stuff contaminating the small amount of oil in there........it wont corrode.  JUST DONT GORRILLA GRIP IT!!!  It has an o-ring so finger tight will probably do and just a tad over that with the socket wrench is all it needs.  People crank on that thing and then find out its made out of fake metal and cant take any torque

Is the fill plug the chrome cap I see at the top of the last picture?
If so is that just a cap with a screw underneath it?

That's the vent and its pressed in.  No need to ever mess with it.

that chrome cap is the breather, keeps water out too...

he is pouring the lube in the fill plug hole. the bolt closest to you is the drain plug.

I change my final drive oil every time I change my engine oil. Takes such a small amount & we all know that is how the drive shaft pinion cup is lubed...good insurance....IMO

I do the same Mallett. As well as every spring the rear end comes off for spline maintenance, maybe just a piece of mind knowing when the good weather comes around my driveline is in good working order. That small amount of fluid will not put me in the poor house. The exhaust pipe on that side does not have to be removed. When using the atv lift the shocks are the only thing that needs disconnected. I personally loosen the exhaust verses setting up the lift as I check all the header acron nuts anyway.

Brian, I don't remove anything...I have a small rubber hose I attach to a funnel & pour my oil in that way....easy

If leaving it on the sidestand are you pouring in the measured amount?

Mallett

Yes Brian, I pour in 5.1 ozs in a measuring cup then pour it in...

I fill with the differential upright, (or bike upright) . I fill till it starts to come out the fill hole. Not very scientific, but it works. Don't over tighten the fill cap. It will crack fairly easily.

DIRKDEE

SUPER BIG THANKS.  HAPPY TRAILS

Also, I recommend synthetic gear oil.

Ya. I didn't look closely enough. I thought it was a new response to an old post
