Sanders never had a chance in hell, the movement he tried to start was with a group that don't vote much anyway and when you looked closer at the costs of his proposals, it scared the hell out of anyone with a fiscal mind.

I hope Biden has some good campaign managers that can at least get him to any debates.   It's not like he's got the best memory ya know.   He also needs to stick to a teleprompter and not speak off the cuff, he always screws that up.

I would however pay good money to see them go at it with pugil sticks for a few minutes.

Not fully understanding the American system, could this really happen?

They wouldn't have enough delegates if they joined now so how would that work? Biden would have to step aside or have a tragic accident?

Beardo, the normal system for selection using state primaries/delegates is as you understand (and see in TV news). 

But if things get sketchy, they can always tear up those rules and make new rules at the national convention (in the proverbial smoke-filled rooms;  though smoking is probably no longer allowed).

So what happens if Biden is selected at the convention but then, in the first debate with Trump, he can't put a sentence together or just bombs miserably. Could they still pick someone else at that point?  Or is it too late then and it's up to the American people to decide on Trump vs Biden?

If Biden gets selected by the party at the Democrat National Convention as the party's candidate for President (and of course whoever they select as his Vice Presidential candidate) would be the names on the ballot - QED - the American voters would be the ones to decide if they want Biden or Trump.

At least , that's the way it should go.
