Running Rough

Hi everyone,

I have a 97 standard with 15,000kms on it. I purchased it as a second bike almost three years ago and have only put 4000kms on it.

Just got it going today and it started fine having to use the choke. Still cold here.

Let it warm up for a bit, turned the choke off and it seems to sputter. I give it some choke and it runs fine again.

I tried it a few times and only seems to run properly with the choke on.

Any thoughts on where to start to fix the problem.

Thanks

How long did it sit without running it?

Had it running last fall, probably sat from September to yesterday.

Probably time to remove carburetors and clean. Can't let these girls sit that long.

Since it will run. I would add a strong dose of chem tool B12. That has a chance. If it doesn't fix it it's removal time

Engine RPM should be 900 to 1000 RPM at idle. The adjustment is just forward of the #3 carburetor (#3 center carb. right side) there is a knob for idle adjust. Turn knob by using your finger between #1 and #3 carb. after you take it off of choke.

I agree to try the b12. Sounds like idle circuits are clogged. Could also be vacuum leaks, but try a shot or two of the additive. If those don't clear it up may be time for a rebuild.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I will try and get my hands on some fuel conditioner and try that, fingers crossed for good results.

B12 isn't available in Canada, or not in BC & AB, so you might have to try something else. Almost any injector cleaner will work. But I would use Techron. A lot like Seafoam, but I don't think that works for hard jobs.

Fresh fuel too. If you aren't driving it around yet, then a empty tank, add a 1/4 can of Techron and 4L.

Don't forget a fan or something on the bike so things don't get too hot. Outside in the cold would help too.

Change the rpm a little too, 1000-2000 rpm.
