just heard vandals tried bringing down the Andrew Jackson monument outside the White House.  Trump said all will be arrested if they try it again, will see?  10 years in jail worth it to do something so stupid?

not a good place to visit the DC area right about now IMO.  

Trump does like to put his foot in his mouth though the other day stating we are doing too good of a job testing for this virus and need to SLOW the testing down -  that was suppose to be a joke but why say it at all to begin with?  what a dumb comment to make IMO, especially from the President.

then he says KUNG FLU  describing another name for this virus.    Tell you what though that young white house press secretary Kayleigh Mcenany is easy on the eyes - google her.   She is in a tough spot trying to re-word what Trump says keeping his comments not racist and putting out the fires that Trump does by just opening up his mouth.

I spent almost 20 years down there and could often see it from my office (we got moved around all the time).  Often took a bag lunch and sat in Lafayette Square to eat on a park bench near him.

Reason I like it, right opposite from the White House, it was like Jackson on horseback with hat raised was always threatening the current president (whoever it was) to do a good job, or else.  Jackson was reported to have shot some man off the White House porch during his term of office.  During his life, he challenged over 100 men to duels (killing only one).



I tell you, one day in Izmir Turkey (USAF TDY 80's), I witnessed three drunk US sailors climbing up on a horse mounted Ataturk statue (the father of modern Turkey) making asses of themselves (US Navy Med cruise often put in to Izmir for shore leave).  The Turks take their patriotism seriously, and a crowd quickly formed and was yelling at them to get down.  Then four Turk soldiers under a Sgt came up and ordered them to get down.  Neither the US sailors or the Turks spoke the other language, but it was clear enough what was being said.  When they still wouldn't get down, the Sgt ordered his men into a firing squad, and took aim at the sailors with G3 machine guns.  Then I jumped in and told the drunks in English if they didn't get down right now, they would be shot off the statute.  So they quickly got/fell down (like 20 feet up), and the soldiers slapped them around some but let them go.

Same thing ought to happen here.

no idea how you survived 20 years downtown DC.  I have only been there once about 6 years ago and 5-6 days was enough for me seeing the sights walking all around.   Was the ONE and ONLY time in my entire life am sure I will get hit up by a black tranvestite dressed in drag with an adams apple.   I kept on walking away and she (or he) kept blabbering asking if I wanted a good time this being at 7 a.m. coming out of my hotel to go walking downtown.  She (or he) must just have gotten off her (his) night shift.     

been there once, was enough for me to last a lifetime.  If into history,  DC is the place to be.  Yes,  many statues all over am surprised some goofball does not do more damage to the many around that area.    When they start vandalizing the War museums is when someone will get shot for sure and rightfully deserved no 10 year prison sentence needed they will be 6 feet under

Downtown DC is not too great away from the Mall area. Most people who work "IN" DC are actually commuting from the VA or Maryland suburbs. Unless you have parking, The best way to see anything (or goto work) is to use the Metro. There were (and probably still are) areas it's best not to be there after dark (Anacostia or SE DC anyone?).

The whole Metro area suffers from "too few roads, too many vehicles" - and that's from when I was living in Reston/Annandale VA from 1988 - 1998 . Rush hour is more like 2-4 hours - and trying to go south on I-95 to Richmond / Virginia Beach on friday evenings is an exercise in patience / stop and go traffic.  I would not be too surprised if traffic has gotten even worse since I was there. Tack on Baltimore being 20-25miles north and you have a recipe for <PROBLEMS>.

Cookie, you're absolutely right, they were at the end of their all-night (hooker) shifts.

Driving a car in cost $20-25 a day in parking (so I never drove in, usually took the Metro trains), but when I rode the bike in to work on occasion (usually at 0530), I got hit on at the lights at side streets, then parking the bike outside my building more days than not.  

I was always a good sport about it and said no thanks I got to go to work, and best of luck to you now.  But those gals you wouldn't touch with a 30 foot pole (looks and disease).  But they must have been doing good business.

It ain't called Sodom on the Potomac for nothing.

On the other hand, at noon in McPherson Square on a workday, I was once propositioned by an old grey haired white grandmother, who promised me the best sex I ever had.  I got the hell out of there as I thought she must be an undercover cop (but too old), but later I saw the cops taking her away.  So I missed out on my chance at the best sex I ever had, I guess.

Jess you got some interesting stories on getting asked to hook up by hookers, even on the cycle at stop lights?  WOW,  they must be working hard to come up to a guy on a Valk.  Either that,   or they wanted to admire your pipes....   sorry, could not resist.   

me coming from small town USA getting propositioned by a black male dressed as a female big dude over 6 foot talking like a man was shocked did not know what to say to him/her.  I pretty much just laughed and continued on my way thought the whole thing was funny as all heck. 

as far as the MLK memorial,  when I visited there in DC for one week,  I thought that one was the memorial that did not impress me much seeing them all.  I walked it all over put on about 30 miles in 5 days which was enough for me on hot concrete was very warm when there into the 90s in June.  Only thing I wish I saw was Arlington cemetery was too far of a walk and too darn cheap to catch a cab or metro/subway.  I wanted to try 1 of the 3 since never been in a cab, nor metro bus, nor in the subway ever.   A real cab (not uber)  and subways do not exist around me only metro buses.

I find it hard to believe with all the national security buildings all over with tons of police officers all around me and a lot in suits guessing working for cia/fbi, etc.  that they do not have enough hands on officers/security to arrest all the hoodlums around that A. Jackson statue.

I went to DC a handful of times around 30 years ago. Once was marvelous. Me
and several other 20-something junior tech dweebs landed right as The Blizzard
Of The Century was starting. We checked in and then did stuff like eat
a pizza and go to an Irish bar. By midnight or so there was a foot
of snow. There was nobody outside. We walked all over the place, that
was the first time I saw the Vietnam memorial, and some of the other
memorials, we had the place all to ourselves.

Another time Carolyn and I flew into Reagan (I think that's the one) and jumped
on the subway right at the airport and popped out in the mall. We saw the
Smithsonian Air and Space museum. I can't remember now if we flew back
that night or stayed in a motel.
