Crashed today

Went down on I4, out side Plant City Fl about 2 pm, car pulled in front and jammed on the brakes, when I hit mine to miss him, guess I hit some oil, front end kicked out and down we went. Was going about 65 mph. I don't know how bad the bike is, never saw it after the accident. I ripped both arms open,exposed some bone on the right elbow, took all the hide off my knees and a few other places. Hospital turned me loose after 4 hrs, as nothing broke, doing some serious drugs to keep the pain manageable. Have to go back tomorrow to get stuff cleaned again. Only thing I did see was my helmet, it did its job, totally trashed. My son is going to pick up the bike, will see later if it is salvageable. Don't think it will be pretty.

Glad to hear your OK Grumpy.  I know that stretch of road very well (I lived in Valrico for many years), I-4 is dangerous and continues to get worse every year (those pothole caused by watering the strawberry crop this winter didn't help matters either).

Sounds like your choice to wear a helmet was a good one.....

I never like hearing the word " down " when motorcycles are involved. Hope you heal fast and it sounds like you are a lucky man to hit the asphalt at 65 mph and walk away...Ride On

May step on some toes here but what if Grumpy had no Hlemet on.

I think it should be a Riders Choice to wear a Helmet or not.

I am a freedom loving person, in land full of freedoms that we all enjoy.

But if you wear a Helmet you may enjoy the Freedom we love longer than if you did not.

Grumpy heal fast there Brother and I know what broken bones and road rash feel like.

I have broken thirteen bones and been in multiple crashes on and off the motorcycle race track.

But one thing you can count on for the rest of my life, however long that is.

Big Al will be wearing a helmet when the wheels are rolling.

Speedy recovery to ya and i am with Big Al helmets are a must if you ride in my opinion of course

Here is a guy wiht a Helmet Cam on his Helmet.

You can't control the forces at work in a crash, like holding your head wiht your hands

or neck muscles to avoid a traumatic head injury.

He was laying there rolling around in pain, but he could move his hands and feet and most of

all he still had his brain pan intact while he was doing that.

So until they can do Brain Tranplants, WEAR A HELMET.

Course I am not sure anyone would want mine if it was available but you get the point.

OK off my soap box as of now.

And yes I have road miles wihtout a helmet and it was ok but did not feel much different.

Went down twice now on oil, 1st a bit slower than you but in 5th gear.

What other gear was you wearin at the time

You will be sore worse for the next few days then you will start feelin better

What a bummer!  Glad to hear that you have no incapacitating injuries.  Sorry about your bike and hope that you have good insurance.  Wearing a helmet was a smart decision; I cannot imagine riding without one.

you know, it makes me feel so sick when i hear these types of things happening.  it scares me.  i'm so happy you'll be okay,but in the back of my mind you always think it could be me.

Grumpy, it always bothers me when I hear a fellow biker going down....I'm giving praise to the Almighty One that it wasn't worse and prayers that you will heal quickly and without much pain...thanks for wearing the helmet...you know, it's always the ones who wear the helmet that later say they were glad they were wearing one...you never hear one say they were glad they weren't wearing a helmet...wonder why???

Stories like yours are the reason I ride ATGATT. I'm all for bikers having the freedom to choose, but for me, I know I'm not so good of a rider I can't crash, and I'm really glad you chose to protect yourself. I've seen better riders than myself get killed on bikes.

I'm REALLY glad you are ok. Skin will heal, and a little bit of money, paint, and chrome does wonders too.

Sorry to hear about your accident, but damn glad to see you walked away from it and are able to write about it today. Heel fast and remember the the bike can be replaced but the operator is very hard to rebuild. I too will always wear a brain bucket.

Glad that you are reasonably Ok, Grumpy.  I'm also extremely glad that you were wearing a helmet instead of a doo rag.  Yours, and Willow's, and fill in the blank, accidents happen no matter how alert you are.

I cannot understand why some people don't wear a helmet. I guess that they get to pick what kind of accident they will be in.

Grumpy, reall sorry to hear that, glad your still with us. I had a controlled landing on that same stretch of road several years back (thanks to Honda's valve stems) Lost air pressure in the front tire at 75 mph, wife on back.

Can't add a lot to this... I am glad you only got flesh wounds... although roadrash "to the bone" ain't pretty. 

I am a MOTGMOTT type.  I almost always wear a helmet, and usually full face.  Unless I am going the .5 mile to the local butcher shop...  I try to always wear either leather or my mesh Joe Rocket jacket... but I admit that the weather gets the best of me sometimes.  But this ain't about me.

Dude... count your blessings today.  Kiss your lady, hug your kid.  And try to committ yourself to wearing more gear from now on.  We're all glad you're still with us.

So Happy to hear you will be OK.  My first time that the rubber side was up instead of down was when I was 16.  It involved changing lanes and hitting oil.  Not a damn thing you can do.  Luckily it was in the fall, as I at least had Levi's and a jacket on...no helmet.  I wasn't going fast, so no real injury.  In the summers I rode that little Yamaha with cut off jeans and a tank top.  I don't know if it's old age and not seeing myself as invulnerable anymore, but I never leave home without protective clothing...even on a really hot day.  I am tempted to take a run in a t-shirt, but can't get myself to do it anymore.  When I took a short run helmet-less at CO InZane, I never felt so uncomfortable and naked.  I have posted before, a bunch of us were returning from the VRCC dinner to the hotel and Ratdog was going like a bat out of hell and I was tempted to catch him and give him a run for his money...but that "survival shiver" went up my back and I chickened out.  Glad you had your lid on!

Trying to, the rash and cuts are not to bad pain wise, but the broken ribs under my left arm are a killer, still catching cat naps sitting in a chair, cannot stand the pain to lay down.
