Hi,

Need a front Interstate Fender completely redone and painted to OEM Green/Grey scheme.  The biggest challenge is the pinstripe accent... not everyone can do that.  I can provide the Honda paint if that's a challenge.

Does anyone have recommendations of someone who can do this type of work for a reasonable price?  Preferably not far from the DMV area, but can ship.

Thanks

(Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, just let me know.)

If he's still in business, Steve is the ONLY striper I'd consider.

Thank you!  And not too far for an overnight ride through the mountains!

Isn't the stripe actually tape with clear coat over the top of it all ?

A decal? Quite possibly. If Honda or the auto-finish aftermarket (e.g., Color-Rite) can't supply the decal then a hand striped finish is probably the only option.

ETA:

I just looked at the 'fiche. A complete fender is shown; decals aren't.

Oh, you guys! Thank you for that.  Would prefer the best bang/buck.  Ya know, I love my girl, but..

Question: Isn't pinstriping the last to be applied? If so, wouldn't there be a line between the two-tones to follow?  (I'm not a painter)

This is what I used when I painted the bags, wind deflectors and fairing.

Base coat of color overall (hot rod yellow in my case), pearl coat overall, mask it off and shoot the other color (black in my case), remove masking and apply pinstripe,, shoot two or three coats of clear overall. You can still feel the stripe a bit if you search for it, but that can be eliminated by sanding between clear coats if you just can't stand it and want to take the time and effort.

For some part numbers regarding OEM pin stripes.
You may find the right ones, they are out there. Somewhere.

I have used 3M products for colored tape (pinstriping).   A automotive paint supply or "on line" search.

Thanks Everyone!! for the suggestions and links.  So far the only real little bump is the pinstriping, which I don't think needs to be 'painted' on.  I don't mind a stick on and then Clearcoat.

My local guy is quoting me about $500 to completely strip down a fender and prepare/prime/repaint it to OEM Green/Grey two tone... minus the pinstriping.  Is that a reasonable price?

It isn't finished without the pinstriping, why won't he put it on? Once he clearcoats it, it's too late.

Why not a wrap instead ... much cheaper. Painting is the past with the onset of wraps.

Follow on Question:

OEM Paint versus matching?

If matching, how good are the results compared to OEM?

Thanks!

I agree with Pancho. The stripe needs to go on before the clear coating. Was clear included in his price ?

I believe one of your colors has a pearl coat, you can look it up. Paint matching will not come close to reproducing what is on the rest of the bike without the pearl. Without the pinstripe, it will be even worse. I know the OEM paint kit with the pearl is quite expensive, but if this guy is planning to color match then custom mix a pearl coat, he can certainly apply a pinstripe. If he is not going to apply a pearl coat, the paint will not come close to matching in the light, you will not be happy and toss out 500 bucks for a $50 paint job.

The original pin stripe is expensive and not necessary, google 1/8 vinyl (it will follow the contours) pinstripe in your color and many sources will show up, as already mentioned 3M is best, not a perfect match, but very close. If this guy is not going to provide a quality job, there are many other painters out there.    Just my opinion Jersey.

Pancho - Very much appreciate the advice and agree with the expectations.

More information.  The OEM Pinstripe kit (L&R) lists for about $70 total... If it's available.

The first guy was simply being honest about his limits.  He doesn't do pinstripe PAINTING.  We never talked about stick-ons.  So naturally all would be done before ClearCoat is applied.

Can we still buy Honda OEM Paint?  Not a matched paint, but the Original Honda Paint?

US paint    search around on their site and you should be able to find your colors. I mixed my own, but "Bighead" found his OEM Valkyrie colors there.  Pretty expensive going that route for one fender, but it will be a perfect match.

I just looked around US paint web site, not sure they sell small quantities anymore. May need to call them, or maybe PM or text Bighead, make sure I'm correct about the source of the OEM paint.

Follow up  It is US paint that was supplying the Valkyrie colors. Call them up and have your codes handy, see what they can do for you.

doubt you'd get a descent border between the two tones on a sculpted surface without pinstripes. Probably why pinstripping is used to begin with.

Agreed. Definitely need the pinstriping.  I ordered the OEM stuff... let's see if it's in stock somewhere and they can ship it!

A pre-painted '99 OEM fender lists for $873 and is still available.

If that fender is in fact the two-tone silver/green version I'd give serious thought to painting the original one a basic black or primer, selling it and buying a new OEM.

ETA: Per the other thread, not available.  :-\

The color separations need to be cleared and sanded BEFORE the stripe. Then cleared again or else you will have a raised ridge down the separations.
