Not trying to be insulting at all Preston, it's just business.  With or without kids, the system everywhere has become..... she gets (at least) half of your net worth regardless of actual facts or fault in the breakup.  Which is lazy justice and wrong, often.  Health care alone can be very steep, especially in perpetuity.  And when she is at fault in the breakup, being ordered to pay all her attorney fees is another big suck.

Plan for the worst, hope for the best.

Prenups  (if you are worth something?) was at the end.   I see no reason for prenups if not rich to begin with.   For most of us, including myself,  I doubt that was much of an issue when we got married.

The 'golden rule' no longer applies:   Best to ask for forgiveness rather than permission first?  LOL 

I have bought a 'few' things over the years not telling the misses although not hugely expensive,  have done it and the spousal unit not liking it.    I always have a comeback though on her shoes or clothes she keeps buying and buying and buying  NOT needed.

I would never buy another cycle or ATV/UTV without 'permission' first though...

I did spring my last 650cc suzuki burgmann on her at the last minute though.  We were driving somewhere and told her while driving there that there is a scooter only 45 further minutes away that I want to take a look at knowing it was a GREAT DEAL too good to pass up for 2K is all only 8500 miles on it superb deal if in good shape.   She agreed to go 'look' at it and after ONE drive I bought it....

Kitchen, Living Room, and Bathroom 

Peeling the carpet back to lay laminate flooring, found a section of the OSB sub flooring rotted from a shower leak under a stud wall that devides the bathroom and living room. So the bathroom took remodeling priority. With the help of my dad, we got it completed within a week.

I'd hate for my fiance to take a shortcut to the basement via bathroom elevator. Glad I found it before it became a large problem.

In previous relationships, I have thought deeply about prenuptial agreements. Indeed why those relationships did not make the final countdown. Appreciate the advice, but I have no value worth legal reinforcement at this time.

The agreement I could have used would have said..... in the event the spouse gets the menopause and loses her mind and puts the other spouse in fear of great bodily harm (or death), he gets an automatic restraining order and she has to move out of the family home immediately.   

I don't know if such a deal is enforceable anyway.  And who thinks of this stuff when the couple is young and happy with no problems at all?

My only other advice is to not spend a quarter/third of your net worth on a wedding and honeymoon.  That money has a lot of better uses, including a savings account.

My daughter is getting married late this summer.   Doing what the father of the bride is expected to do by tradition, I quickly started evaluating what I could afford and let my daughter know what her budget was and if there was anything past that then, that was on someone else's expense account.

Weddings are expensive, very expensive depending on several factors like how many come and venues, wedding dresses, food, entertainment, ect.......

Regardless, I screwed up and said this is how much I can afford.   How about a smaller ceremony and I'll pay for it and you get the rest in the form of cash or check as a starter gift for the marriage.   My Lord, you would have thought I just shot somebody.         

I knew this before but, the lesson was reinforced, Dad has very little say when it comes to my wife's and my daughter's wedding.

It looks like my daughter is going to do something like my son chose to do.   He had what's called a barn wedding (although it was no longer a working barn).   It was actually and really nice setting out in the country and it was by no means what people think of as a barn.   It was actually very nice with a huge deck, lighting, the whole shebang.   At that time, it was less expensive than renting some of the larger facilities large enough to handle a crowd that size.   Around a hundred.

My daughter's wedding is going to require a larger facility.   But, she's found a "barn" that is absolutley beautiful here in Mississippi.   It was never a barn and was hand built (Post and Beam Construction) purposefully for such events on a lake.

Which has me to thinking, why didn't I think of that..........

This was almost exactly what I did Preston (the first time, age 24) (except all participants were local).  A simple church wedding (her's, her family's), and a nice clean sportsmans club with simple food for a nice reasonable price (80-100).  

She got her way on everything but the frilly tux shirt, and kneeling in church (nope).  Her dad paid for most (he had plenty of money) and I paid for some.  After her photographer tried to take over every aspect of the wedding (stand here, do it again, have her feed you the cake, yada), I threatened to hurt him if he didn't back off and take the best pictures he could from a distance (which he did).  

My dad got us a very nice (honeymoon) place in FL for nothing (business), and we paid the airline from MI.  (A fancy boathouse, with boats to use in Miami)  This was better than the wedding (for me).  

If I had to pick one word for both of my weddings it would be:   Exhausted.
