FWS banned the use of lead shot for hunting waterfowl nationwide in 1991, recognizing the impact lead poisoning was having on wildlife and the environment.

Yep, lead shot was banned quite some time ago. Puddle ducks scoop up quite a bit of it while feeding. But I always thought it went in one end and came back out the other.

Steel shot doesn't work worth a damn. At least I don't like it. It has to go a whole lot faster than lead and it tears up barrels.

As far as lures. I didn't think they stayed wet for that long and you don't lose that many of them and they don't get eaten very often. What is going to replace them, steel ? Well, then they'll decide that rust is bad for the environment.

That is an excellent question/statement.    It would seem that you would have to eat the lead to cause an issue.   Is that something water fowl do, eat lead from the bottom of the creek, stream, pond, etc?????

So, it turns out that it appears hunters leave behind carcasses with lead and other animals eat them.

I do not think that lead pellets and lures scattered through american forests and lakes would make us more patriotic than doing the health minded thing for future generations, which would be to just go ahead and not risk lead exposure.

I guess it is difficult to imagine that  hundreds of tons of lead weights
that go into the water each year could possibly go into solution and contaminate
the water in some of these crowded places with lead to the point that it
kills and sickens a significant amount of wildlife and degrades the rivers.

As I mentioned, part of the reason lead was outlawed was because shallow water ducks [ Mallards, blacks, etc] scoop up the lead while feeding.

I'm in favor of whatever research they can do to determine what it was that brought the President to his current mental state.  If it's lead we certainly want to reduce the possibility of others following that path.

So, if fishing lures and weights used for fishing are bad for the environment (when they get lost) and lead shot and bullets left or expended into the environment and left are bad, they what about lead wheel weights? 

It would appear that several states already ban lead wheel weights.

Wonder if you are violating a law if you enter the states of California, Washington, New York, Illinois, Maine, Vermont or Minnesota and have lead wheel weights on your bike?

I bet there isn't one single legitimate environmental impact study that shows random lead bullets in the dirt and sinkers in the water cause any harm or impact whatsoever.

When I lived in Michigan, the lake I lived on had a sportsman club at the far end. They did a lot of skeet shooting. The lead pellets inevitably made it way into the River and the swans were dying from eating the lead. They ended up having to dredge an area of the river to remove the lead. This was a sportsman's club that had been there forever. They then went to plastic skeet and changed the the direction of skeet range.

A gentleman I knew ran the trap shooting range here. About every three years they would "harvest" the lead taking a layer of dirt and whatever, then it supposedly would be recycled.
