Section of Challenger found in Atlantic Off Florida

" A documentary film crew looking for the wreckage of a World War II-era aircraft has discovered a large piece of Challenger, the space shuttle that broke apart and killed all seven people onboard nearly four decades ago. "

" The piece is more than 15 feet by 15 feet; it's likely bigger given part of it is covered with sand. Because there are square thermal tiles on the piece, it's believed to be from the shuttle's belly, Ciannilli said.

The fragment remains on the ocean floor just off the Florida coast near Cape Canaveral as NASA determines the next step. It remains the property of the U.S. government."

Very strange, I was just researching the Challenger disaster just yesterday, seeing if I remember it correctly.  And this news story pops up the next day.
It was probably one of the most tragic things I have watched in my lifetime.

I was working shift work at the Nuclear Power Plant and I was on the swing shift. 

When I got up in the morning and walked out into the living room my wife looked at me and said "It blew up".   

I remember the NBC Newsman (I forget his name, but remember his words) on the failed launch the day before something like "Foul ups bleeps and blunders". 

I believe the launch was pushed because of words he said.  I remember it all very well......

     I was waiting on the trailer to be loaded somewhere in Tn. Had my little 12 " B & W T V on the dash watching the launch. Then all hell broke loose.  Bout as bad as J F K being assinated.

I was TDY in my Rhein Main AFB Germany billeting room drinking coffee watching it live on TV.

I choked on my coffee...... did that just happen?  No one's going to survive that!!

I was working for Piedmont Airlines in the Reliability dept and someone had wheeled in a tv so we could watch the launch. Everyone was in disbelief - hard to realize what you're seeing.

This and any other pieces of Challenger need to be reclaimed by NASA.   Not because anything can be learned from retrieving it but because now that the location is known, there will be scavengers who would steal it and then try to sell it to the highest bidder.   Who would buy something like this, I don't know but, I am sure there is some scumbag who would.
This brings back some very sad memories.

I was watching it live at the time it happened. The state office bldg where I worked had a large rotunda on the 2nd floor that was surrounded by huge windows, in this case we were all at those windows facing east. Everyone was talking excitedly about the launch and got real excited at lift-off. Then...it happened. The entire hallway went totally silent, I got a sudden sick feeling in my gut, many of the women started to cry. The rest of that day seemed to move in slow motion, hardly anyone talked about it, our office was spooky it was so quiet. Other departments were much the same, some closed their doors for the rest of the day.

When I first moved to Florida, I worked for Dennison Mfg. as a field technician and the Cape was part of my service area. While there one day, I was given a chance to see the early module that caught fire and killed Gus Grissom and his two partners. It was a horrible scene to look inside that module and think of those three men being trapped in there. Judging by the melted stuff, it was intensely hot.

 I was working at a Chevy dealer here in New Haven at the time. I was in Jolet IL on a dealer trade. I drove a Monte Carlo SS there and picked up a Celebrity Wagon that nobody bothered to install the radio antenna. So I pulled over on the side of the road,found the antenna and threaded it on so I could at least listen to it on the ride home. When I got back into the car they were talking about it. Four hours later I was back home and saw it played over and over on the news. Bad day.
