I've had two.......
.... an air cooled and a liquid cooled R1200RT.
They were fast and comfortable with very good weather protection but I'd never buy BMW again.
They had really good customer care whilst your bike was in warranty but BMW in general didn't have a great reliability record and costs outside of warranty were astronomic.
There were engine and drive shaft paint problems on the last one I had. In the local dealership there were around a dozen engines on the floor in the workshop. These weren't waiting to be repainted. BMW were scrapping them.
Also the BMW forum I belonged to was an embarrassment. A lot of members up their own 4rses.
I'd never buy a BMW again.

my 04 r 1150 rtp is showing its age at 87000 miles  I think I got it with 36000 on the odo
The ABS light comes on repeatedly but I know I still have brakes just not abs when flashing
Otherwise the damn thing has been reliable
Uses about a quart of oil every thousand or so miles   but there is a sight glass so easy to spot
did have to replace the windshield for $70 and the seat about the same cost a few years back
I love the electric windscreen, the fog lights for visibility and the performance

Thinking maybe a Versys is a better bet for when it does start to break down or maybe a used connie

I like mine.  I like my Valkyrie too.  Different bikes for different rides and different moods. I agree parts are expensive but I do all my own maintenance and have a stock pile of parts from the recyclers.

36,000 miles on a drive shaft?    My KLR gets 20,000 miles on a $100 chain and sprockets set! And a rubber belt on a Harley Sportster is good for 80,000 miles or more.

When they brought out the K 100 (GW answer) with "coated" cyl. aka "The Chevy Vega" syndrome, what the hell were they thinking thus their 2 cyl. boxers before that period, love the oldies but still not a Honda.
