New Gas Can Issue - Bad Design

I suspect this has been addressed here before but I figured it would be easier to just ask the question again.

I just bought a new five gallon plastic gas can.  It has one of those weird things on top to supposedly allow you to fill your lawnmower or bike gas tank with out spills.  Its crap. 

So (since Jess mentioned the five or so gas cans he filled this month) I was going to start sort of doing the same thing.  But these gas can fillers are crap.

I know there are "fixes" out there that you can purchase and reform the Gas Can to be safe and easy to handle and fill. 

So, my question is, do you have recommendations for these "mods".  If I remember one I saw did require drilling the plastic gas "can" but that can be done with some patience.  Only issue would be plastic in the can which can addressed.

So, any recommendations on a simple and/or durable fix to allow me to fill my lawn mower and Valkyrie from a gas can with the "slushing" back and forth at the nozzle.

If you're drilling an empty, new can that's never been filled should be quick and easy to drill the hole, pop the vent in, then turn it upside down and shake any shavings out.

Side note, Trump's EPA is rolling back SOME of this BS, but sadly not all of it. They're still requiring the ridiculous "Spill everywhere" spout, but are allowing the manufacturers to put vents back in new cans.

I've vented a couple of mine, but I still use the couple unvented ones to fill smaller old regular cans that are easier to gas up mowers, whackers, blowers, chain saws, and even top off the bikes.  Moving the gas over to smaller cans on the ground just takes a couple minutes, and it's worth the time.

My 2-stroke mix goes in 2 and 2.5 gallon regular cans.    

I do not care for muscling a full no-spill 5-gallon can upside down to gas things up (then overflow them), but once it's only half full, it's not too bad.

I don't see a vent in those water only cans, though they don't have the nozzle you have to hold back to get the gas to flow.

Thanks Jess.  I use small one gallon cans for my two stroke devices.  So, I fill them from the big cans.

On Thursday the EPA announced they're deregulating gas cans to make them flow better. The Obama era rules eliminated vents to reduce vapor emissions.

Calling those unvented Obama cans spill proof is a big lie.

Without being able to do a nice controlled slow pour from a vented can (where you can actually see what you are doing), overfilling small equipment happens all the time.

I won't advocate for this "fix", but I have a friend who modified his CA gas can.

He drilled a vacuum relief hole on top at the back of the plastic gas can the size of a tire valve and pressed that valve into the hole, removed the core valve and simply takes the cap off to allow air to get back inside.   Works for him.

Those spouts   didn't  fit my Blitz brand   only the  Gott  cans.

If it's  a  blitz   this  is  the  spout ya  need , the threads  are  just a little  different.

A couple years ago I bought some replacements from tractor supply.

The ones I bought were very similar to these. I'll have to check the packaging of unopened one I still have to see if it's the same but from the looks of it, it is.

They're not deregulated though, they'll still have the convoluted spouts, they're just allowing them to add a vacuum relief hole, but it has to automatically close somehow.

35 yr. old round 5 gallon and a large offset funnel does all my needs. They were my boat cans for the 75hp. Mercury OB. And no I don't miss the boats days.  :)

Jimmy, I got what looks like the same pump from Harbor Freight for about half the Amazon price.

I don't use it for gas, I use it down in my basement sump pump hole when the power goes out in a monsoon (like yesterday afternoon).  It's slow (2 D cell batteries) but beats hand bailing with a coffee can down on my hands and knees.

I wanted the auto-shutoff since I am usually filling the genny at night.  :) 
My camping friends have the HF one and have replaced them every year.
they all save the back from getting tweaked.
