It's probably all right to use, especially if you can't get any other service of any type. satellite internet services have been pricey, with bandwidth caps, but Elon seems to be trying to minimize that on Starlink.

However, if you can get 500Mbps + service without going to space, get that instead. This is especially important if you want a low latency response for online gaming. Just browsing, email, streaming and the like can be done with satellite just fine. Just be careful that you don't have bandwidth caps (this applies to all forms of internet service, not just satellite).

Aren't you living in a retirement home, with common services like internet ? If so, is the provided internet not meeting your needs / desires ? Is other internet such as cable or fiber not available ?

Good question.  I have considered getting Starlink as a backup pending failure of my fiber optic internet service.  Very interested in the responses.

I have installed 4 of them and everyone is very very happy with them. Great speeds and almost never an outage.

I've been hesitant about a unit for emergency situations but I haven't looked into it recently though.

Last time I did some research (about a year or so) it seemed that you can't activate it on an as needed basis. They sell (or sold) a service package that was like "StandBy service) for a low cost per month but still a monthly service expense for something that is rarely or essentially "never" used except for extended or extreme circumstances.

If anyone has other info on such a situation would appreciate any info.

I've been pondering the same idea, but my GFiber is down so rarely that I'm not sure it would be worth it - I usually use my cellphone's hotspot capability so our relatively short outages, and while it isn't the fastest, it does the basics ok.

In fact today I will be using it , because the flooring contractors are doing my network central room today, and this post is being done on it.

Brightspeed 5G is $41 a month. Its decent but not F.O. fast thats for sure. Starlink is still a thought.

Serk

I've not personally used it yet; living in an area where fiber is available directly to my home I don't yet see the need. I have however researched it pretty well, and would be confident switching to Starlink if I were in a situation where a good terrestrial provider (With FTTP) wasn't available.

Starlink being a thing is what has made my dream of moving to my rural land after the triplets move out a possibility.

(Another plus - the antenna units are not only Made in the USA, they're made in Texas! I drove by the factory just a few weeks ago.)
