My valkyrie has a problem that I hope someone can help me with...

Six Guns

A little background on my problem. When I get on the throttle hard, I hear a knocking coming from the rear end. It doesn't always make the knocking sound when I get on it hard but I have heard it enough times to be concerned about it. I wouldn't be in such a bind except I leave for Washington D.C. on the 26th of this month for the Rolling Thunder Rally with a bunch of Harley's from Texas. They are taking a truck and trailer in case someone breaks down on the way there or back. I don't want my valkyrie to be on that trailer. I've called some of the Honda shops in the metroplex and they want around 85 to 89 dollars an hour labor rate. Does the U-joint make a knocking sound before it goes out or could it be the pinion cup? I'm not much of a wrench and I have been working a lot of overtime during the week and Saturday and Sunday's and I'm afraid that I'm going to run out of time to get the bike repaired before I leave for D.C.. Here is what I am proposing for anyone that would like to help me out. I would rather pay a local DFW VRCC member to help me get my bike ready for my trip and feed you some grubb  than to pay the dealer. If I have to replace the u-joint and or pinion cup, to be on the safe side, then thats what I'll do. I'm running out of time. How long does it take to get the parts in if in fact it is the u-joint? Anyone one want to help a brother out? DID I MENTION THAT I DON'T WANT TO BE ON THAT TRAILER.  I live on the west side of Fort Worth and would be willing to bring the bike to your location after work. Thanks in advance.

Send a PM to DaveinFrisco texas,, he knows what a u-joint sounds like right before it gives out...     Those north Texas guys seem to do a lot of wrenching, so they're pretty good at it.  :cooldude:    I mean after they're through with the quiche and lattes, they get to wrenching   :2funny:

Hey Six Guns, everyone is out at the Landing of the Valks in Greenville, but I called Frisco Dave. He said that a knocking that sounds like an ignition misfire did occur before the u-joint went out. He also said the rear felt sloppy and he had increased vibration in the handlebars. Serk just went through some rear end rebuild too and your problem could be the pinion cup or the final drive teeth wearing out and skipping. There is a wrenching party in the morning in Celina and Dave said they could pull it apart and help fix or identify the problem if you can make it. Maxim Honda in Allen had a u-joint in stock last week and they are checking with the dealership in Greenville to see if they have parts. You might check around to see if someone closer to you has the parts. I am sending you my cell number in PM, feel free to call, if I don't answer leave a message cause I will be on the Valk today.

Ghillie,

The problem is that I have been working 7 days a week and I don't know when my next day off will be. Looks like the only time I have to do the repair is in the evening after work. Worst case scenerio I will take my valk in to Al Lambs Dallas Honda this coming Monday after work as I am running out of time. I will need to give them some time to do the repair. I leave for my trip in 11 days.

Victor,
I have a spare u-joint. If it is in fact a u-joint you automatically have to look at everything else on the drive line. It's not that hard to do on a stand. Wouldn't mind helping you out, let me know. I have the tools, u-joint, shop and time ~TJ Only thing 60 miles south of you send you an e-mail.

TJ,

I have to work tomorrow and next week as well. I won't know until this coming Thursday about being off next weekend, but I'll have to decide by this Monday about taking it to a dealer  to give them some time to repair the bike. Thanks for the offer of help. I'll let you know how it all turns out.

I've heard some of the guys talking about dry splines, could that cause the noise?? If you have a jack removing the rear wheel and checking the splines and bearings isn't a bad job.. Just a thought :-\

If y'all can get together to do the work, I've got a spare shaft/pinion cup (new) and wheel bearings if any of that turns out to be the problem.

That is a great idea and with all the drag racing Redneck does with Dragonbreathe, you gotta' think he's changed out a few drive train parts!

TJ,

Are you talking about the 3 o-rings that go in the pumpkin? I did those about 5K miles ago. Which seals are you talking about?      :uglystupid2:

If you need to replace the rear bearing you also need a dust seal     DUST SEAL (30X47X8)
91253-443-762  (replaces 91253-443-761

The swing arm also a seal  OIL SEAL (27X43X7)
91261-ME9-005

As for the o-rings, I think they should be replaced every time you remove the rear wheel.

TJ,

I hope that my parts come in today, tomorrow, or Saturday as it looks like my only day off before my trip next week on Wednesday will be this coming Sunday. If you are up for it, I can come to your house on Sunday to check out my bike unless you have some other plans. I will call you later on tonight to talk. I think I still have your number at home on one of your e-mails from awhile back.      :)

TJ,

Not gonna call you tonight as I just found out that my package of valk parts will not arrive until this coming Tuesday. At least I'll have them for my trip in case the bike doesn't make it all the way to D.C.. Better take the right tools with me in case I need to take her apart. Thanks for everyones offer to help.

Victor,

If you decide to go to TJ's Sunday to inspect your drive line  :cooldude:, I'll try to coordinate a drive shaft / pinion cup / bearing hand-off with Daniel so that you'd have almost everything you might need.  I have the o-rings, dust seal, and thrust washer, but don't have the swing arm seal.

Dave,

Thanks for the offer. Let me check with TJ to see if he is available on Sunday before we go through all the trouble of handing off parts from Dallas to Fort Worth. I could just take a leap of faith and see if my valk makes to to D.C. and back.       :uglystupid2:
She has never left me by the side of the road before. I'll call TJ tonight when I get home, and if he is available on Sunday I will have to drive to Dallas  after work on Saturday to pickup the parts. I'll keep you posted on what I'm gonna do. Thanks again....      :cooldude:

My 99 I/S had some "knocking" from rear wheel.  I read on the forum that dry splines can cause the noise.  Kind of funny, the guy I used to take it to to have my tires changed noticed the noise and brought it to my attention.  That is when I decided to learn a little more about my bike and removed the rear wheel and pumpkin.  It was dry as a bone, even though I told him precisely what to do and left my manual with the bike on more than one tire change.  Anyway, serviced the splines and the noise went away.
I know that everyone rides differently but is there a mileage where many of the u-joints start failing?

Six Guns is on his way home from a wrench party. I am curious to find out if he still has the same problem? We have no parts leftover   :o:2funny: that I know off. Thanks for lunch~TJ

TJ,

Thanks for hosting a wrench party just for me. LOL. I rode home and could not hear the dreaded  knock that I had been hearing. The real test will be my trip to D.C.. I feel much better about my chances on this upcoming road trip. The DFW VRCC comes through one more time. TJ, I enjoyed my visit with you and your family and the lunch hit the spot.     :cooldude:

The only thing that we found wrong was a rear axle nut that was very much toooooo tight. It took my HEAVY DUTY impact getting the nut off. It seem I read somewhere on the techboard that could be a problem. Your bike should be good for at least 10000 milles, time for a lube job. Ride safe ~TJ

The motorcycle shop that I use to mount my car tire was the culprit. The axle nut was waaaaaay to tight. I don't know if that was causing my knocking sound but when you finally got the nut off I saw the frame flex back into it's normal position. I guess that why most valk owners do their own maintenance. All drive line parts checked out good so we put them back and changed the rear gear lube to Royal Purple fully synthetic and she runs good without any knocking noises. Torqued the axle nut per Honda specs so we are good to go there. I'll let everyone know how the trip went when I get back from D.C.. Thanks again for hosting a wrench party just for me.      :cooldude:
