My Valk started that thing where the overheat light flashes and/or stays on for a bit when running down the highway and you know it isn't overheated. What all parts do I need to replace to fix this? (Other than covering the light with electrical tape ) :D

Just the sensor and whatever coolant is lost I would also recomend using water wetter

Thanks. I've never had a problem with it overheating. I may wait until this late fall. I'm going to put new radiator hoses on it. (Of course, I have many plans-this may be the year I actually do them)

As you say I doubt its overheating but I would get an ir gun and just check, I would hate to be wrong ;D

I did a search and found this:

On the 97-99 model standards and tourers, there is a Thermo Sensor in the thermostat housing that sends signals to an Engine Coolant Temp Indicator Unit (under the left side cover).  The Engine Coolant Temp Indicator interprets those signals and decides when to turn the Coolant Temp Indicator Light on. On the later models, Honda eliminated the Engine Coolant Temp Indicator Unit and replaced the Thermo Sensor with a Thermostatic Switch. The Thermostatic Switch turns the Coolant Temp Indicator Light on directly.

In the past, intermittent Coolant Temp lights on 97-99s have been caused by failing Engine Coolant Temp Indicator Units.  Instead of replacing Engine Coolant Temp Indicator Unit, you can replace the Thermo Sensor with the Thermostatic Switch from the later models and jumper the connectors that went to the Engine Coolant Temp Indicator Unit.  This fixes the problem, simplifies the circuit and saves you some money.

Thanks for the search. I tried that but must have gotten the wrong words. I remember this from before, but not the details.

What you are looking for is the "indicator unit" Honda Direct Line part #- 38710-MZO-003... Price, $39.96
I had this go on two bikes, under your side cover. PLEASE don't make the same mistake I made. I took off the radiator and flushed, replaced thermostat and sensors. I was told they never have heard of a sensor going bad. Very easy fix, plug it in & ride  :cooldude:
If you can't be a good example: be a WARNING!!

SixGuns...Sorry, I should have read your post before my response  :-[

Has anyone replaced the early style with the newer style sensor and done away with the controller? Sorry I didn't pick up the year thing :crazy2:

Had the same issue...  The MZ should be followed by a 0 (zero) not an O (oh)...

Just ordered from Dillon Brothers for $50

My '97 Standard has given a false 'over heat' indicator light for the past few years, I remember seeing the fix, a while back, but never took care of it.  Well, I finally got off the pot, and ordered it.

Just when the highway straightened out for a mile
And I was thinkin' I'd just cruise for a while
A fork in the road brought a new episode
Don't you know...

Conform, go crazy, or ride a motorcycle...

You were right, it is an 0 and not an O. I can get it at Chaparral for about the same price with my discount.
