DYNA3000 problem or not?

I'm running the DYNA3000 set on #5.  No problems until yesterday.  After traveling over 3000 miles to and from Inzane, the bike died on the exit ramp for my last fuel stop ( and no Highbinder I was NOT out of fuel!) .  Fueled up, and then started the bike.  It was running very poorly,  as if it was starving for fuel.  I ran up the throttle and set the cruise to keep it running.  It ran for maybe 15 secs or so, and then the RPM's went sky high until I released the cruise.  It did this several times, and then smoothed out to "normal' .  I then left and within a mile it started to run badly again.  I inadvertently discovered that if I downshifted and kept the RPM's above 3500 it ran smoothly, but if allowed to drop under that it returned to the rough running and missing.  No backfires or sputters, just rough.  Before I got home ( about a 50 mile trip from fuel stop) it had started to run pretty much normal again.  My first thought was fuel starvation until I discovered the 3500 RPM factor.  So I'm wondering if I've become a victim of the notorious DYNA3000 "Make sure you keep your OEM  ICM with you in the saddlebag" issue I've read about on this board ?  I'm thinking maybe the Texas heat got to it and caused it to start failing intermittently.  This morning after sitting overnight, it seems to be running normally again.  I have not gone out riding to check out it's on-road performance yet.  Any other explanations will be gratefully accepted, as will possible fixes.

I had more or less indicated problem with my first Dyna 3000.
The engine died and it seemed like it was starving for fuel.
I sent it back to manufacturer and got a new module in a week. This is two years ago, and I have not had any problems since.
I always have the original ignition module in the side bag
The question is not what you look at...but what you see...

dreamaker

I had a Dyna 3000 before and from time to time the bike would act like it was running out of fuel. But I would  shut the bike off and restart it would be OK. I don't recall who it was, but they told me when lived in a warmer climate they had issues with their Dyna 3000 and after they moved to a cooler area they didn't have issues with the Dyna any more. So we figured it may have been overheating the Dyna. It was suggested to take the Dyna out of the boot so the module would not retain the heat and get better air flow.

Thanks Dag and Dreamaker !  You both have had similar issues with mine, and I'm assuming we're on the same page.  I know one member posted about fabricating a ICM cover from aluminum to help dissipate the heat more efficiently.  I may be doing something similar soon myself.  But keep those suggestions and theories coming guys, the more the better  :cooldude:

I'm sure that the temperature was not the issue here.

hmmmm, seeing the " " with your post, and knowing you've been to the great state of Texas, I'm wondering about just how serious you're being here.  You need to come on down in July or August Dag to fully experience this Texas summer !  It's hotter'n     here !!

I think Dag was referring to where he lives not Texas.  Although knowing some Texans I am not suprise that you would think that everybody is talking about Texas. ;D
Thanks,

After reading your post, and then re-reading Dag's; I think you got it right.  I took him to mean that "temperature is not the issue here" as in "here in my problem".....   but I'm surprised to learn that not everybody is talking about Texas ?!!  ???

Has it gotten wet?  I had a Dyna 3000 failure and got a replacement.  It's been 6 years in the replacement (in a ziplock bag to keep it dry) and no trouble at all.

Of course here it's only Indiana hot.  95 and humid lately.  Not Texas Hot.

:)  I was thinking of the temperature here in Norway when I had the issue with my Dyna 3000.
How old are your unit? I know there was some problems with them a few years ago.

Wet?  hmmm good question.  We did find some rain off and on.  I'll keep your ziplock bag in mind. Thanks Jabba.  I almost met you at Inzane. You were 3 people ahead of me in the dinner buffet line, but I had my hands full at the time  :D

Dag, I don't know how old it is, I bought it used.  Supposedly came off a bike with several thousand miles, but you never know.

Which trip thru?  You don't get to be called Jabba by making only 1 run at a buffet!  :)  :2funny:

I bought my Dyna  3000 from Doc Moose 6 years ago and it promptly failed.  When I sent it back to Dynatek, they upgraded me to the new(er) one.

By what means did you attach the ICM to your bar?  and the bar to the bike?

You guys crack me up!  ;D

Bobby,

If you "think" you are going to get in there and do some modification to the boot of your dyna3000 you have got to be kidding!  :2funny:   After seeing the "craftsmanship" of the wiring system for that bike there is no way in   you will be able to fit all that shiat back behind those pretty black and yellow side covers.    Oh if only everyone could see for themselves the birds nest under that bike.  :D  I was trying to locate his zumo power cord that went from the handlebar into the fairing (gobbs of wires wraped inside that fairing also), and then down under the tank and into what I would call "the black hole".  I would just end the chapter with  "Bobby's Law"  the end!

But, if this helps get you moved over to colorado use it!!!!!! too hot for my bike to run down here so we need to move!   :cooldude:

Nope.  Didn't touch the brisket...

I even drag my stocj ICM around on the IS, which has a stock ICM.  Just in case...  When the Dyna3000 tried to strand me, I was SO happy I had the spare, I carry it ALL the time now.  Switching it back and forth between the standard and the IS.

the side screws on the dyna are for attachment purposes. front of bar attached to the battery/storage case bolt to frame connection. the rear of bar, just nut and bolt into the storage box.
