Final Drive Maintenannce Parts?

About half way between the Hill Country and DFW I discovered the last layer of a MC tire must be made of paper mache!! Fortunately, I took it really easy and made it back to the casa. Darkside here I come.



This will be the first tire change since I've had the bike, so I would like to do a really comprehensive final drive maintenance. I've been sifting through the tech board searches and there is so much information there.
- Is there a list to "buy these" for final drive maintenance?
- Is there a consensus for rear wheel bearing replacement? The bike has about 24K on it, but considering a darkside tire should be on for awhile I don't want to miss anything.
- Who in North DFW will mount a car tire on a MC rim?
- Dynabeads or conventional balance the tire?
- Replace the Valve stem with a metal one - did I see somewhere those are available locally?

Only people I knew who mounted car tires was Griffs Cycle Shop in Lewisville.  They are closed now.  There are 2 other shops on 121 business north of 35.  Also a brand new one just opened around the NW corner of 121 business and 35 in the old gas station car was part!  (Dont expect that one to last long) 
The dynabeads website doesnt suggest using them in normal car tires.  I was going to have the regular weight balance done.  Cant see it much anyway with the saddlebags.  Though Griff Jr said it zeroed out on the balance, and so did the front when I did it a week later.
The rest I dont know much about.  My final drive looked pretty good so I didnt mess with it much and hindsight, I dont think I had the stems replaced.  I'll prolly pay for that later...

Yes.  There's a lotta things you probably need to do while you've got the back wheel off the bike.  

 . . now that I'm an expert  :uglystupid2:

  I think you said you're coming to the meeting this Thursday so bring a pencil and paper (old school .. okay bring yer computer).  You'll get lots of info with details from those who've been there.

From the above fische, you need parts 5 (thrust washer) and parts 20 and 21 (o-rings.)

You can probably get away with re-using the thrust washer.

You'll need 30% moly paste (Honda Moly 60) for the drive gear and driven hub and to coat all the o-rings.  You'll need 3% moly grease or a good quality bearing grease such as Bel-Ray Marine for the pinion cup and the ends of the drive shaft.

There is no set interval for servicing the bearings.  Check them for smoothness by rotating them with your fingers.  Try and apply some side load as you do.  If you're not experiencing grinding feel or noises from the rear in corners, you probably don't need to mess with the bearings.

I would replace the final drive oil too.  The manual calls for Hypoid Gear Oil 80W.  I'm using Amsoil 75W90 synthetic.


Discount Tire in Corinth will mount a DS tire (they did mine and Sixguns'.) I have mine balanced at Denton Cycle Center and I also run Ride-On balancing compound and sealant.

I definitely recommend the all-metal valve stems. You may be able to find them at a tire store.

Don't forget to clean the holes at the bottom of the pinion cup.  

And most important: Loosen the nuts that mount the rear drive to the drive shaft housing and re-tighten them LAST, after the axle nut has been torrqued to spec

I think I have a pretty good list now - Dag and Valkpilot - perfect.
I'm behind on Valkyrie maintenance. I've been rebuilding a 77 GL1000 (mini-valk) this summer and now I have both petcock and final drive on deck for the Valkyrie. She needs a good cleaning too.

I'm considering trying http://www.cyclepartswarehouse.com for the parts. Nothing against HDL, I've used them before and had good service. A buddy of mine recommended this alternative and they're cheaper across the board for OEM parts (same parts fiche as HDL) . About the same pricing as the HDL's Holiday 10% off deals, when they make the OEM stuff available and without the $100 minimum.

Maxim, Al Lamb, and Cycle Center of Denton will all match online pricing.  I used HDL, filled up the shopping cart, printed it out and took it with me to the dealer.  Got the same pricing and better delivery.

I've been real happy with Cycle Center.  They balanced Sixguns' DS tire for free when I took him there, they stacked my clutch plates for free, and they matched online pricing, no questions asked.  Hard to beat that kind of service.

Thanks for everyone's help and advice, both here and searching the tech board.
Got my rear tire changed and serviced the final drive/drive shaft.
Changed the front tire.
Rebuilt my petcock which was the source of the fuel starvation issue at 100 miles.
Did the nutcage mod.
Built a lift adapter.

Picked up my parts at Denton Cycle Center and they matched online pricing.
Discount Tire in Flower Mound mounted the DS tire, but couldn't balance it. I took the front tire ($41 for new Metzler off ebay  8) ) to Denton Cycle Center to mount the new front and they balanced the DS rear with minimal lecturing.

Special thank you to HayHauler for sending me a couple metal valve stems - very cool.  :cooldude:

I'm glad I got the service done when I did. The splines looked OK, but as dry as the were they  probably won't have lasted that long.
