On 1st January out lot thats running the UK are putting tax up on everything,it's estimated that diesel will be around 1.30 British pounds per litre,nearly 8 dollars per gallon.

I'm not sure if salaries are similar across the pond but I earn £20500 a year ($32.000),mind you those that smoke have to pay around $12 for a packet of 20.

I filled the car up yesterday @ $2.999. Went by the same station this morning & it was $2.859. GRRRR!

And what is up with the third digit after the decimal?  No other item in this entire country has a sale price to the thousandth's of a penny.  Do they really think we aren't smart enough to round up?  Plus, it is almost always a "9" anyways.  Why don't they just cut the crap and say it is "$3.00"/gallon instead of "$2.999"/gallon?

RJ I  feel for you and those on SS but I'll tell you what I've had to struggle so hard to make ends meet then now. We used to be able to make just fine and then some with just me working,now that the girls are older the with is working too and something just ain't right man. Talking to some co workers as well and they say the same thing,"never been broker"

I am with you Rod.  But I think it is going to get worse as the value of the dollar goes lower and lower.  My wife went back to work this year as well.

Just got through with some major home improvements due to the fact that I can see the dollar losing so much value.  Thought I had better get it done while I can still get something for the buck.  Filled the Diesel the other day at $2.999, and came by the next day and it was $3.099.  The dammed pump cut me off at 75 dollars.  Even off road diesel is way high.  Think prices on everything is going to make a drastic uptick very soon.  My favorite Coffee just went from 5.99 to 8.45 a can in the Commissary.  Looks like its gonna be a rough ride for awhile before things get turned around.

I will go one farther and suggest that if fuel prices had gone up at the same rate every thing else has we would not see the immediate increase in cost of goods every time fuel goes up. At least gas goes up AND DOWN ! When was the last time we saw bread and milk take a 30 cent drop in price?

 The latest Federal Reserve meeting came and went this week. And I gotta tell you, the Fed should replace the eagle on its website with an ostrich!
I say that because the post-meeting statement was a bunch of boilerplate text. No recognition of rising inflation pressures around the world. No recognition of an improved tone to the economic data. And most importantly, no acknowledgement whatsoever about the dismal failure of QE2!

 The Fed SAID that we still have "price stability" and that "measures of underlying inflation have continued to trend downward" ...

The Fed said prices are stable. But many consumers would disagree.

But the November Producer Price Index (PPI) for finished goods surged 0.8 percent, almost double most economists estimates. Moreover, the inflation is not stemming just from rising energy prices. Overall, the cost of food rose 1 full percentage point in November, equivalent to 12 percent annual inflation. Egg prices led the way higher, jumping 23 percent in November, while the price of fruit jumped an astounding 14 percent.
 Think these are one-time, freak price jumps?
Think again, because since the first of this month... the price of corn is up more than 3 percent ... coffee is up more than 8 percent ... sugar is up 8.49 percent ... oats are up nearly 6 percent ... while cotton prices are up more than 16 percent — all of this in just 15 days!
 The consumer price index hasn't started jumping yet. But just like night follows day, it will as companies pass on higher wholesale costs.
 But there's not a whole lot you and I can do about it...be aware, prepare, stock up on non-perishables. Cut the wastefull unneeded spending, change and prioritize your lifestyle.
 All the folks I see complaining by me still smoke two packs of butts every day and have money for their booze and get their Government handouts

IMHO high gas prices a few years ago was the match that lit the fuse on the current economic woes. We may have had the same problems but they would have spaced out a bit & not hit as hard all at once without the high gas prices. People will retreat into the same "economic shell" mode that they did if prices go up much more.

Your right the price of Coca-Cola is also too high.  I think it is related to the high gas prices.  The fuel to deliver Coke as gone up so they have had to raise the price.  I have also noticed that the guys working on the oil rigs and offshore rigs seem to drink a lot of the stuff so there must be some connection between the two.

Made a "little" jump here in SE Wis. FWIW also; yesterday afternoon Reg. was $2.89 and this morning the same station was $3.09. 20¢ in 20 hours-ouch!

It took a day longer than I predicted earlier. Over the weekend our prices went from $2.999 to $2.829. Then this afternoon in one fell swoop it went from the $2.829 up to $3.099
