The facts so far show the Arizona shooter to have been pretty apolitical, and simply a mentally disturbed mass murderer.  That's all.  No new or existing laws would have prevented what happened, or can prevent it in the future.  It is an established fact that if you are willing to trade your life, you can kill almost anyone.

Sarah Palin's entire statement was very good and well thought out.  It was also reasonable and not an incitement to riot like those on the left.  These attacks on Palin and strong political speech from the right are an attempt to make people forget what just happened in the November election.  It has sidetracked Congress this week.... hopefully not next week.

The term "blood libel" has taken on a broad metaphorical meaning in public discourse. Although its historical origins were in theologically based false accusations against the Jews and the Jewish People,its current usage is far broader. I myself have used it to describe false accusations against the State of Israel by the Goldstone Report. There is nothing improper and certainly nothing anti-Semitic in Sarah Palin using the term to characterize what she reasonably believes are false accusations that her words or images may have caused a mentally disturbed individual to kill and maim. The fact that two of the victims are Jewish is utterly irrelevant to the propriety of using this widely used term.

Both the ADL and Dershowitz pretty much admit that the term has gone beyond its old meaning in modern english.  In hind sight perhaps she should have used a different wording... but screw it.  Im no Palin groupie by any means, but everyone with any cognitive ability hearing her full remarks understood her meaning.  To say otherwise is just grasping at straws.

I, also, don't have a problem with defending against false accusations, but using analogies that have specific and painful meanings simply shows her to be callous or ignorant.  Those are two qualities we don't need in politicians.

A poor choice of words in a political sense?  Perhaps.  Not done to offend anyone in the context of her statement. Even the broader usage of the term (which was the context she used it in) has been acknowledged by many in the Jewish community who are not supporters of her.
