SUV tent. Anyone used one?

Not a SUV tent but the X and her hubby have one for their 1/2 ton. They dont like it and he makes a good point. You have to have everything out of your truck to deploy it. No tool box or anything. Queen size mattress takes up the whole cargo area so not much floor room left. He paid a heafty price at the GM dealer for his. Seems like the bunjies for the fenders would rub alot in the wind.

Nope never used one.

But I really think it's a idea that is after and before it's time all at once.

I think I would just buy a camper, or just use a tent.

Not too practical looking.

My wife would probably just take off to the store while I was sleeping in the tent and drag me to death.

On second thought she has to sleep sometime too.

I have a Dome tent that is fitted for use in the bed of my old Ford F150.
Found it in a JC Whitney catalog, and it was very inexpensive.

I would never sleep on the ground when I went to Daytona Bike Week. Although it leaks around the zipper,...as it seems to rain in Florida a lot.

I know you are talking about SUV but I have a tent like that and used it attached to the topper of my truck. Worked good in my book, I used two army cots to sleep on in the tent and the back of the truck (in your case SUV) worked great for the kids. I liked that I could secure my expensive gear in the truck and detatch the tent for driving around. Mine did not take wind well and had to be staked down good. Watch the exhaust pipe when you hook it to the truck.

Haven't used one one, but have seen them. Probably fine as long as there is no rain beyond a small shower. Rainfly looks very minimal. Good luck.

Mine was from Cabelas and as dry as any tent can be. I had it attached through several "severe" storms and it held up as well. I borrowed it to a friend and altho I do not know if it was being used free standing or attached it went through a nearby tornado with minor tears and 2 broken poles.

No exp with the truck tents, however I have gotten some lessons in tents in general in the last 3 years.

The cheap ones are OK, and if you treat them well it will last and be dry. The first things I would get are:
1. A silicone spray product, like Camp Dry
2. A good sized cheap tarp.
3. A cheap tarp that will fit UNDER the tent.

Treat the tent right after you get it, you can go with seam sealer also but the spray will probably be enough to take care of the rain, if not, you are right next to your SUV, throw the tarp over the whole thing and stake it down. Treat it twice and let it dry after each application. Aluminum spikes for gutters work well for extra tent pegs and they are cheap. The tarp that goes under should not stick out on the sides, because if it rains it will hold water under you. If the one you get is a little big, just fold it under.


I own a big cheap one, a 15+ year old Coleman Sundowner 3 man, that is still in good serviceable condition even after all the use with the scouts and before, and now 2 Eurekas. My personal preference is a hammock http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___40677  when packing and a Cabelas fat guy special cot http://www.cabelas.com/sleeping-bags-cots-accessories-cabelas-outfitter-xl-cot.shtml  when car camping. That cot is the cats whiskers. Though a tad heavy for the ALICE pack, your back will thank you if you only have to move it into a tent. I use the rain fly off of the family tent for a tarp for the hammock and have set up the cot, zip tied the the short tent poles to the cot, and used the rain fly over top. Worked great.

Having camped most of my adult life, I've been through the range of tent quality. At $119.95, that tent is poor quality. The rainfly doesn't go down to the ground to keep out rain. Poles are fibreglass, not aluminum. The concept is great. Too bad they don't make another version for serious camping. It's a great concept though. I'd buy a quality tent with 2 openings and then put a tarp up linking the tent to the back of the SUV.
