Speedometer accuracy

Is it true that the Valkyrie speedometer's are 5 miles off in accuracy? A higher speed and greater distance traveled.  The Vermin guys in Seattle are firm believers.  When I test my speed against a GPS device I see the difference in accuracy change with speed.  I see that when checked against a road side radar setup that the accuracy seems to change with the speed measured.  I'm asking this question because on the last 2 trips I got 40 and 42 miles mpg.  If the Valk is not measuring the distance correctly that would help explain the great mileage.

May be the answer for sure.
Plus you'll be able to ride umpteen miles in 15 or 16 hours and at average speeds on two lane roads (65mph for over 1000 mi. for example) that you never thought possible!
I don't pay attention to speed inacuracies ('cept for radar/laser). I'll get there no matter how fast or slow.

Depends what ISP Trooper pulls you over. 

I'm guessing at some speeds it ok but at higher my guess is its off. Never really bothers me.

My speed on my I/S speedometer vs my Zumo GPS is 2 mph less all across the dial.  I am running an E3 tire which I believe people have said is slightly bigger than other tires.  I think that would account for my numbers.

yea, they're off, but I don't believe it's 5mph across the range, it would be a percentage of the speed, not a fixed amount.

mine seems to be about 5mph optimistic around 60 or so, which would be about 8%.

It has been said all Japanese motorcycle speedos are off 5 percent... to avoid US Fed rath/penalties on import rules.  Accordingly, the error increases marginally at increasing speeds.  I've always found it a bit helpful running 10 over constant (not in neighborhoods).

Mine is off by 5mph.  My cousins always complain that I am going too slow.  I tell them that Honda put in a mechanism in the valk to save me from tickets.  I am always running @ 10 miles over the limit.. well actually 5 mph. 
I never considered though that the odometer would be off to, makes sense.

At 186,000 miles per second(SPEED OF LIGHT) . How much would the Valkyrie Speedo be off?

Just a thought, because at that speed time slows down and you would be actually be aging slower and able to see

much farther into the future than anyonw else. Of course all of the people not traveling with you would be dead.

SO what's the point.

This just in at 186,000 miles per second your Valk Speedo would be reading 195,300 miles per second.

I have 2 99 I/S, both are off 4 mph according to my Zumo 550.

The 'accepted' margin of error for speed measurement (radar/laser/calibrated speedometer etc..) in KS is 3%. if you are slow by 5% and the police are accepting 3% that equals 8 mph at 100mph. have to be 10mph over for a moving violation here but they can write ticket for anything,you are guilty until JUDGED innocent.

What is the % of error on a GPS? According to the same Garmin GPS, my I/S is off by 4 mph @ 70, my 02 ford F-350 is off by 5 and my car is off by 3 mph,  I never knew this before the GPS and I still don't care!

I only care because I run within 2 or 3 mph of a ticket. Don't want to let a speedo error get me caught. Lol

If you turn your gps on WASP mode it's going to be really accurate. I travel in slot of straight lines which helps on accuracy.  Less error between readings.

My 2000 speedo is so close to the Garmin Zumo 550 GPS I can't tell if it's off.  The odo is off slightly from Garmin's - about 1% - less than a mile's difference in 100.  I've got an Avon Cobra on the front.

Speedo is about 6% or so off, however, most odometers are within 1%.  Close enough to figure mpg without any correction. On long trips over 1000 miles, my odo will be within .5% of the GPS.
