Nashville, Tn people - What to do there? UPDATE!! (OP)

The w/e after Fathersday (22-24) We'll be in Nashville. Flying in Friday, out Sunday.

Besides the Grand Ole Opry what is there to do?

What/where is there a good centraly located hotel/motel?

This is about the halfway mark between where I live (S, Texas) and my son in NY so we're going to meet there for a w/e visit.

Hey fellas, thanks for all the info on Nashville. 
Got back Sunday from our trip and it was very good.

As I stated the main reason for me going was to meet/visit my son who lives in NY.  Nashville is about the halfway mark from there to where we live in S. Texas.

It was just for the w/e so we had limited amount of time.  We did spend time at the Lane Motor Museum which was great.  Most of these vehicles are amazing.  If anyone watches "Stacey Davids Gearz" on the opening scene there is a vehicle with massive tires that runs over and smashes a car. This was done at this museum by an amphibious military vehicle called a "LARC". The tires on this thing are 9' tall. The smashed car is on display there too.

I wanted to go to the Antique Archeology place from the show "American Pickers" but as we arrived on the tour bus there was probably 40-50 people standing outside waiting to get in.  I like the show but not enough to stand in 95deg weather for no telling how long.  We got pictures of the building and that's good enough for me.  The tour bus picked up some people that were dropped off earlier and never got to go in.

We spent quite a bit of time on "Broadway" and, as people stated, there are many bars and each one had live music of some kind. Plus a lot of "street musicians", some good, some not.
There was a street magician that we watched that was very good.

In all it was a great, although short, w/e and I got to visit and spend time with my son whom I haven't seen in close to a year.

   One new little curiosity to explore is the Antique Archaeology store. If you watch American Pickers any you know what this is about. I have to admit to me it's more of a tourist attraction than a store. Many items on display are not for sale and the items for sale are pricey. Most people I saw there were buying t-shirts ect. It's worth an hours or so to have a look. You can also take a dinner cruise on the General Jackson. I did it once and it was entertaining.

Be sure to check out the Parthenon.  It is a spectacular building in any time frame, but to imagine it being built so long ago (438 B.C.) is mind boggling.  Had it not been for the mindless misuse by the Turks as a powder magazine,  the original would likely remain with us today as a functional building.

i have lived here 15 years and i dont know what to do here,,opry tickets are 75 bucs each,,general jackson is about 80 or so each,,,i just ride the bike a lot,,,now the fun is in pigeon forge in east tn..

Lake Jackson huh?  That's only bout 100 miles from me, know a few good people from there.

  We were in N-ville last week. Been there several times I have to sneak in as to avoid the (nevermind) The Upper Room is a good look. they have a carving of the last supper that is worth seeing , and the origional Grand Old Opprey is where to go.  BTW say hey to my daughter and new son-in-law

When we were in Nashville in 07, we took a Civil War tour of town of Franklin.  They show you this homestead that was in the centre of the clash.  There are so many holes in the house and barn you wonder how anyone could have survived.  The guy who does the tour is an expert on the Civil War and   he makes you feel like you are there.  Well worth the trip.  We booked the tour through our hotel.

Spend an afternoon and evening walking/shopping/people-watching on Broadway Ave.  It's the "strip" of downtown Nashville.

I can't believe no one has mentioned doing a self guided tour of the Ryman Auditorium.  Fanatastic place with such great musical history!!  It is downtown.  Very interesting place, (if you like music)....

Downtown is hopping every weekend, music everywhere. The Sheraton is a nice place to stay and is within walking distance of pretty much all the tourist destinations, albeit an uphill crawl back home for the party crowd. Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw have a major concert on Saturday night 6/23 at LP Field right across the river (Ticketmaster). Problem with the Grand Ole Opry is that it 15 miles away from downtown and everything else, and you'll probably have a bigger time at the Chesney concert. The Antique Archeology suggestion is good, and you can also get some of Popcorn Sutton's moonshine next door. Country Music Hall Of Fame and the Nash Trash Tour are also good bets.

Not real sure about all of Nashville but, I just spent three days there over Father's Day and walked the strip a bunch of times with my daughter.  Had a lot of music and commotion going on down by the river at some park they have there so, we went that direction.  Found out it was the annual Gay Festival. 

Turned around and went back to the strip.  That's all I'm gonna say about that.
