Hi guys, thanks for letting me join.  I love my 99 Interstate! It is with out a doubt the best bike I have ever owned!!  I will spend many hours reading the great info you guys have been so kind to post here.  One thing, the chrome on the gas tank filler top reflects in my windshield when the sun is higher.  It is a real distraction.  I have thought of maybe blacking it out someway??  My bike is black so hate to lose any chrome.  Any one else noticed this.  Holding your hand over the chrome corrects the problem but no way to ride.  Any suggestions??  I did read on the archives about having a gasoline smell and that it would come through the key hole on the filler.  Is there a gasket you can order to correct this?

You could get a tank bib that has a gas tank cover... The place I got mine from went under when the economy tanked
a few years ago, but I heard that Talisman, a VRCC support vendor, will make you one, and I heard they were high quality  :cooldude:

Frank Smoak used to somehow tie a doo rag over his, it didn't seem like he fumbled with it much, and it
didn't fly off...

Depending on the time of day and directions the valve covers reflect back as do the gas cap and sometimes off the crash bars. I also have some really nice sunglasses. :coolsmiley: RIDE SAFE.

I've wrapped a bandana over mine.  Worked so so but was kinda PITA.  I ordered the big trim piece around the cap from Pinwall and painted it black.  Better but the cap is still shining in the shield.  When I can scrape up some extra cash, the Talisman bib will be my solution.  Or I could just ride in the other direction until dark.

I have the same problem. I took the cap off the tank cleaned it with carb cleaner and painted it Rustolem satan black. It's been 2yrs with no chipping. I didn't do any more prepping then cleaning the cap so when I want to go back to chrome I will just strip off the paint.

the chrome on the baker air wings also reflect the sun

I have a cheap leather fanny pack that attaches with magnets, does a good job covering the cap and holds lots of " stuff"

Its almost 10yrs old time for a new one

I have that problem and asked my dealer back in 2000 if any one else had complained.  He said I was the only one.  That was before the vrcc.   On my first, I did the tank bib thing.  Bought a bib and had a local leather guy make a cover for the gas cap chrome part, that velcros on.   I recently purchased a leather tank bag w/three compartments that uses magnets to hold it in place.  Works good and doesn't move, even at over 90mph.  Covers the gas cap enough so I don't see it in the screen.   Plus I can move it from bike to bike and the extra storage space is cool for small crap.

I finally decided to give up the chrome. Just this spring I broke down and scuffed up the chrome and covered it with crinkle paint. It is so nice to not see that glare in the windshield

The one above was around 140 shipped, is alot nicer than the honda line ones that used to be available, and the pocket is big enough for a camera, extra batteries, smokes, lighter, mp3 player.. yeah, at the same time.

Very high quality, very good communication, and a great supporter of this board.

Edit: I just looked, and he also has one on his website here

that has a small pocket for around $105 he can add all the bling you want on that bib as well!

I agree, picked up a large fanny pack, cut off the strap, and glued hard drive magnets inside the side pockets.  When needed it sit over the chrome and provides storage (much storage) as well.

Hi guys, thanks for letting me join.

HEY!  WHO LET THIS GUY IN HERE!!!  i thought this was a private club!!   ;D ;D

i know what you mean with the glear, i've delt with the same problem at times, but instead of buying "cheap" sunglasses, get a pair that are "polorized".  you'll love 'em, exspecially if you ever go out on a lake at sunset and you've got to head into the sun.

I'm not sure what you are all talking about.  I've never had a glare problem on my Interstate.

Thats because sitting side saddle like that greatly impacts the angle to which the reflection would meet your line of sight......riding that way seems extreme just to avoid a little glare

HA HA....  good one.   I also think that with the shorty wind screen where it doesn't magnify or reflect, and especially if he is looking OVER.... makes a dif.

No, he only rides that way in a skirt. And then the wind blows the dress up over the tank which takes care of the glare  :cooldude:

PAVALKER:   are you saying there are strong magnets inside a hard drive out of a computer?  Your idea sounds great, and I happen to have a coupla old  computer drives I don't want or need.

I think Valker completely eliminated his glare problem, I can't remember how he did it, but it took him several years as I recall :2funny: ;D
