We have a local club here called the 500er's...To join you can't have over $500.00 in your bike....Those guys ride everywhere even taking week long trips.

Back in the mid 80's I spent nearly a whole year as a motorcycle mesenger ridng a well used 200cc twin cylinder Honda Benly in and around London. About 30,000 miles in that year. I also took it to Europe on 2 separate occasions.

Once to southern France, once to northern Itlay.

Oh yeah. I also rode a 90cc Yamaha step thru moped for 2 weeks whilst my regular work bike was being fixed. About 600 miles. Yee-Ha!!!

Having lived in High Wycombe for 3 years while in the Air Force, I spent many a day and night off in London.  The fact that you had the bollocks to ride a motorcycle in London traffic impresses me.

Hell yeah I'd do it.  In 1974 I took 30 days leave and rode from MCAS El Toro, CA to Seattle, WA up the PCH then o  Colorado Springs CO, through the mountains of Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and the desert of Nevada and California on a Honda 250 Enduro that I bought for $250. Knobbie tires and all.

Guy sold it to me because it didn't run worth a S... . Two stroke motor and the exhaust was plugged up.  Split the muffler, cleaned out the crud, packed some steel wool inside of it, welded it, and rode the snot out of it.

To me, that was the adventure of the ride.  No clothes (not many), a tent, a blanket, and not a care in the freaking world.  Sold the bike 2 years later after own a goldwing for a year for $250. Priceless.

yep your right..that is an old gl1000 4 banger..

Back in the 70's my brother and his friend rode 2up a 50cc minibike on a 180 mile round trip. I thought that was crazy.

While stationed in San Francisco, 1951, I was handed my TAD (Temporary Additional Duty) traveling papers to Elgin Air Base for 6 weeks.

Packed a couple of boxes of clothes, shipped them to myself at Elgin.

Rode a Harley 61 hardtail made into a 74.    Talk about an iron butt, that was one.    At the end of my assignment I shipped the same boxes of clothes to the base in San Francisco.    Only this time I rode home on a Snortin Norton.   The previous owner had a Lucas Gremlin he couldn't find.    So, I only rode daylight hours to California.   Only took me one day longer going home.

Would I do it again, not at this age, but if I was 40 years younger, I'd head out.

PS:   I rode Route 66 most of the way, then dropped South into Texas.

Definitely an interesting read.

I can't help but wondering though, how many bike shops he passed that had a good used rear tire that they would've let him have.
