Took the bike out for a short ride and looked down, no speed registering on the speedometer.  WTF!!  After a short 120 mile coffee run I disassemble the speedo cable and found the inner cable broken.  New complete assembly (both inner and outer) on order but I was wondering if any one else has experienced this?

A second question: what kind of lube should be used on the inner cable?
Thanks,

ive replaced mine 2-3 times over the years. use a good graphite speedo cable lube available at most auto parts stores.
I got a rock :(

I had to replace both the cable and the front wheel hub gear when I bought my bike.
A 99 showing 12K on the odometer.
So one has to wonder what in 13+ years the mileage actually is. And why it was never fixed to begin with.

Speedo cables can break.. Mostly they break cuz they get dry and start hanging up in the cable housing.. I've always used a white lithium grease.. If the broken cable has been spinning for any amount of time it can ruin the housing.. Whenever a wheel is removed is a good time just to pull the cable and slobber on some lube..
