Greetings From The Landmass Between Mobile and New Orleans

It seems The Weather Channel and other media outlets has forgotten that the Great State of Mississippi exists.  Just about all of them have referred to the Mississippi Gulf Coast as the landmass between Mobile and New Orleans and one weather babe even referred to the Alabama Louisiana border.

Mississippi Disappeared!!

Not to worry, though.  The gulf coast will soon be in the spotlight and all will be familiarized with your state.  Our white house HERO, "as president have declared YESTERDAY the entire area is now a Federal Disaster Area".  Before the storm has even arrived.  Have to make sure the welfare customers have another golden parachute deployed in advance.  Great opportunity for Zero to be a HERO while simultaneously pushing Romney's Big Day onto the back page, and redistributing our hard-earned wealth to the Poor Unfortunates who vote for him.  Amazing how proactive Our HERO can be when it aligns with his narcissism and political agenda.

There you go!  That's how I learned to spell it.

Btw Mark, I'm not relying on the gubmint.  Have 2L coke bottles 3/4 filled with water on their side in my upright freezer.  Serves 2 purposes, the first is they take up extra space and will help keep the freezer contents from thawing if the power goes out.  Second is they provide a source of drinking water if needed.  My first line of water is the generator I will plug the water pump into.  I live out in the country and am not on a community water system.

We were the ones NOT crying for the gubmint to save us.  Next morning we fired up our chainsaws, cut our way out of driveways and roads then went to help our neighbors that needed it.  Friday after Katrina I took my Dad to Mobile to get supplies.  As we passed through some areas there would be entire squads of National Guard at gas stations keeping the peace.  When you got out in the country, there would be a couple of bored Deputies leaning against a car. 

When we got back from Mobile with the generator, three 5 gallon cans of gas, few cases of bottled water, 3 ice chests filled with ice, food, and a Coleman stove with a couple of gallons of white gas; we discovered the power had been restored.  I took all the water and ice to friends in Pascagoula.  They had nothing left.  I went in my townhouse a couple of days before and discovered I lost everything on the first floor.

Back in the '70's when I was just a young airman basic going to tech school at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, the wife and I lived in an old hotel that had been converted into apartments over in Gulfport across the street from the Gulf.  It was just east of the S.S. Hurricane Camille and just west of where the Grand of Gulfport is now.  The S.S. Camille was an old shrimp boat that had washed up on shore during hurricane Camille and they made a gift shop out of it back then to remember the distruction that Camille had caused.  

I remember well what all used to be there in that area from Ocean Springs down to Long Beach.  Went back over there about two years after Katrina and was shocked at what was gone.......virtually everything that used to be.....the old hotel the wife and I lived in....everything.....gone.  

It really amazed me that the media had only focused on New Orleans and the flooding and totally ignored an entire area from Pascagoula all the way over to Bay St Louis that had been virtually and totally annihilated off the face of the planet.  

Yes, what happened in New Orleans was horrible, but the Mississippi Gulf Coast was annihilated....AND ignored.

BF, you should have seen the pics from a flyover of Waveland.  Blocks and blocks inland were nothing but slabs.  The entire city was washed away. 

When I was a little boy in the early 70s, I remember a barge on the beach between Long Beach and Gulfport that was being cut up.  Camille put it on the beach.

I probably have.  After Katrina, I saw alot of aerial photos of the entire region and was shocked at what I saw.  That's how we first learned about that old hotel we lived in.....saw the aerial pics of where it had been and where the Grand of Gulfport's barge had washed up across the street from were it used to orginally be.

It still amazes me how the media can ignore what happened there.

Meteorology Dept at the University of South Alabama analyzed the radar of Katrina.  They discovered Katrina was in a renewal cycle at the time the eye made landfall.  The collapsing inner eyewall was at Waveland and the outer eyewall was at Pascagoula.

If you go to google earth and slide the clock thingy back to 1989, you can see the building as it stood. 

It somehow survived Camille untouched.....but Katrina simply washed everything away that used to be there.

Everyone didn't forget Mississippi. I have made eight mission trips to Gulfport and Van Cleave, Mississippi snd shelled out over $2000 of my money to help rebuild. Each trip we would take about 20 people. Hundreds of other groups went even as late as April of this year.  Now it appears that we may start over.

We went for a week and put the drywall back up in a lady's house in Pascagoula... on the last day we
drove to Pass Christian to see the slabs. A lot of slabs and live oak trees, everything else washed clean...
a bunch of people from Churches from all over flooded through there for months, working for a week
at a time. Local churches away from the destroyed area housed and fed them. One of the steps
before drywall involved gutting a house, and bleaching the framing lumber. It was weird to see
a house made from framing lumber that looked new, but all the nails were rusty...

Guys, I wasn't talking about normal people and the charities that came to help.  We appreciated it.  They helped plenty of my friends rip out drywall and bleach the studs to kill/prevent black mold.   It was the media I was talking about.
