So my buddy didn't read the manual and failed to keep track of the molly on his final drive. Both flange and ring gear are shot and we found a replacement at pinwall via eBay. Unfortunately they had already sold the flange from that bike and now we're looking for a replacement. Anyone know if flanges from other model Honda's work in their place? Have a part number "42630-mt8-305" if that's any help...

The only way Id use another flange besides the one that used to go with that drive is if that drive you are buying looks "as new"  If it looks new, i.e. no appreciable wear, then buy a new flange from HDL.

both used but not used together is no good.....dont do it

42630-MT8-305 is the right part number.

As Jeff sez, it would be good for the wear on the flange and the final drive splines to be similar.

A new flange is about $150... I don't know if a new flange would eat up a 50% final drive quicker, or
just be eaten up quicker itself, but it will roll you down the road  if it is all you have :cooldude: ...

Thanks guys, a new flange sounds like the way to go. Not sure how much wear there is on the new (used) drive but the running bike it was from had 57k miles before total/tear down from front end damage.

I ran a pinwall final drive and a new flange for a long time... the drive and flange are still good,
they're on the shelf because the seal popped out of the pinion cup and the cup and
shaft got ate up... my pinwall final drive had real good splines when it showed up - hope yours
does too!

I'll gladly pay shipping for everyone's leftover's

Mine's my spare... all I've got to do is put on this other pinion cup...  :cooldude:

When the OP put in his number earlier, I put it into google... here's one of the hits that
came up:

http://www.cheapcycleparts.com/products/320653-honda-42630-mt8-305-hard-parts-flange-set

If you go there, there's a "Show All Vehicle Fitments" button... maybe there's a bunch of cross
reference buttons out there, I just never noticed them... a bunch of st1100s are on the list too...

I don't think you would have any issue at all mating a used flange  (as long as it is in good shape) with a good used final drive.  You would have two unmated parts working together, if you buy a new flange you would have the same thing....two unmated parts working together.  Think about a bit, when you lube and re-insert the drive flange into the final drive splines, you don't put it back in exactly as you took it out..

I meant it when I said "only if the used drive splines were as new"  If there is no appreciable  or noticable wear (or at worst VERY little) then a new flange at least wont compound error.  One side is correct, the other has a tiny bit of wear, the result has to be better than both sides having some wear differently

If there was more than tiny to un-noticable wear I simply would not buy the drive without the flange

That makes sense to me. I haven't counted the number of teeth on the drive flange but however many that is, that's how many possible mating combinations can be made. If the parts are reassembled exactly as they were it would be pure luck. So most every time they are taken apart and reassembled the mating gears would be in a new position.
Maybe I'm missing something....?

Since there are different ratios between the flange teeth and the ring gear there is no such thing as putting it back together "wrong". Only way I could see a problem is if the ratio were 1:1...

Youre not trying to say that you think the teeth mesh and unmesh and change position as its rolling are you?  I dont understand what you mean by different ratios.
