From a high school buddy now living in California. A few years ago he had someone break in about 2:00am, was living near Los Angeles at the time. He said all he had to do was reach under his bed for his shotgun and chamber a shell. That's an ominous sound if you're about to be on the receiving end. Told me the burglar literally dove through his living room window to get away, all the cops had to do was have a K-9 follow the blood trail.

Got some loads for the 12 gauge from a catalog, called Centurion.  3, OO buck, 1, .50 cal Ball, and 3 more OO buck.  Makes a hell of a mess of a test target, ( im a hillbilly, and used an old washing machine)

You have a right if someone breaks into your house whether they are armed or not and blast away.  Wouldn't flinch an eye if he/she died instantly. 

The law may see it differently, but I don't care.

There is a .455 cal pistol in our home, revolver type.  Easy access to it.  Six 250 grain soft lead bullets should do the trick.   If that won't stop the unwanted person, the pistol is heavy enough to be use as a club.

You shoot that casull round in the house and you will be hurtin puppy.  If its w/o ear protection you will probably never need hearing protection again after that.

Not a recommended firearm for home defense.

With his description, I'd assume it'd be something more the likes of a Webley Revolver or some other lower powered .455 caliber round and not a .454 Casull...

But either way, as long as he's ready to defend home and hearth! =)

Only reason I'd prefer a shotgun over a handgun is all I have to do is aim in the general direction and let the spread do the work. With a handgun you don't have that spread, you actually have to aim it and in the dark that's a bit difficult.

I like your idea John, but that spread may include my fridge, widescreen, windows, stereo and other things I prefer remain unventilated.     Plus, they're going to bleed a lot more on my carpet.

Now the stairwell to upstairs is a free fire zone.  Both are available, but I'll go to an auto with night sights first, probably.  But if I hear talking, the 870 will have to do.

You are right about the .455 being a Webley Revolver.  It shoves out the lead around 700 ft/second.

At that speed it will knock down the intended person with out killing folks next door.  I have shot this round thru a car door but didn't make it out  the other side of the car.  It is about the same noise level as a 12 gage going off, so no real damage to ears.  Also this gun is not registered,  it  came from my Dad being overseas in WWII.   

I agree that a 12 gage is a bit more intimidating, but don't have a scatter gun in my collection.  So this is my personal safety device and the .455 hole one looks down gets pretty big.

My home defense is the Judge, oo buck, oo buck, 45, 45, 45.  My wife has Bond Arms derringer the Snake Slayer   2, 3in mag 00 buck  .410  for shakey hands   2 shots, 10 hits!
