Timing belt?

New to Valk. Is there such a thing that needs to be replaced? When? How much?

Yep 2 of them.....I believe the manual says to check them at 100K....I sure someone will let you know if I got it wrong

Yup: He's right. Check them at 100K, but most folks change them. These are a single overhead cam engine but no valve/piston clearance. If a belt breaks, the engine is toast. Check the shop talk section for the Generic parts page. Lots of good info.

I changed mine at 75,000 miles. The old ones looked good yet but like Buda pointed out, if they break the engine is toast.  Honda sells the belts for around $60 a piece I got some Gates belts for $16 each on line.

You should know they are toothed belts because whoever you deal with may not know that and you could end up with the wrong belts. I learned that from the local auto parts store the hard way.

With all this "if they break" talk I've not heard one report of any actually breaking.

And if you do decide to change the belts follow the procedure to the letter. It's NOT a really difficult job but it is exacting. RIDE SAFE.

I never heard of one breaking either but $32 is cheap insurance.  I changed them on my Goldwing too.
The belts looked good on that also.
And yes, follow the correct procedure. One tooth off could be disastrous.

Thanks for the info. I assume you guys are talking miles not kilometers. That's 160,000 for me in Canada and my new to me Valk has 72K so I guess it will be a while.

Ride it and enjoy it, the more the better. The few things that need servicing shouldn't come up that often (final drive, brakes, fluids, tires). If it ain't broke, don't fix it, peace of mind or not, that includes belts.

If you buy new OEM belts and put them in your garage were you can get to them and then forget were the place is, how do you find them???

Easy....go buy more (keep the reciept) because as soon as you buy more, you will find the old ones!

That is true. I have many things I have had to do that with. I have found one and I know the other one is in there. I'll fine it if I have to tare the garage down:)

A while back I had one old gent tell me on the Wings, the belts are guaranteed for the life of the engine. Then added...."you break a belt, that's the life of your engine."  He had been a Honda mechanic for nearly 30 yrs. and only changed belts when asked by the owner. As stated, he recommended checking them at 100K and change them if it gives you piece of mind. At the time he was riding a GL1200 Wing with over 200k on it and had yet to change the belts. Not sure I'd have that much confidence in the life expectancy of the timing belts.

I changed mine out only because they were 12 years old. Nowhere near 100000 miles but i got a nice warm fuzzy after i changed them out.  Zero-nada-nuttin change in performance of my machine. JUST that peace of mind thingy.  RIDE SAFE. P S-which B T W should take care of her next keeper-belt wise-rather nicely.
