Lugging in high gear

I have a 2001 interstate with 30k on it. I have noticed when on the interstate in 5th gear running 75-80 mph and around 3500 rpms, when I give it full throttle to pass a car it shakes and lugs. I have checked for vaccum leaks and cant find any. It also does it in 4th gear around the same rpms but not as bad. Could it be the jets since it sat for 3 years before I got it? The carbs were cleaned and sent through an ultrasonic cleaner. I have also ran several cans of sea foam and berrymans through it. It idles fine, just in the higher gears it lugs. Any ideas?

If the carbs are truly clean, I'd guess your petcock needs a cover set. It's a rebuild kit for the diaphragm stuff in the petcock.

Gavin_Sons

It has a pingle. Done it before the pingle also. im going to check the vent line this week, to make sure it is clear.

How ols or how many miles on the air filter?? RIDE SAFE.
Today is the tommorow you worried about yesterday. If at first you don't succeed screw it-save it for nite check.  1964  1968 U S Navy. Two cruises off Nam.

New earlier this summer, maybe 4000 miles

kinda sounds like not enough advance at higher rpm, or too much.
could the trigger wheel be off?  just guessin. :-\

Gavin_Sons

It does have a 6 degree trigger wheel. Maybe pull the cover and make sure its set right or get a 4 degree and try that?

GOOSE

a 6 degree wheel is too much for an interstate....the interstate, and the gold wing 1500 need the 4 degree wheel.

Gavin_Sons

Im going to change it out with the stock trigger wheel. When I got the bike I got a box of parts with the stock trigger wheel in the 6 degree package. So im assuming it is a 6 degree whern on it now. Hopefull that will solve my problem.

Different exhaust systems and changes to the carburetors, which seems to be what a lot of riders do, such as jets and needle modifications explain a lot of these kinds of problems you report.

So it would be good information to let the forum know exactly where you are in regard to carburetors and exhaust modifications.

The trigger wheel alone, whether 4 degree or 6 degree will make no difference and have no affect as to what you report.

pulling the cover will not let you even see the trigger wheel, much less "set" it.

I haven't had this experience, but could it be a clogged air filter?

Gavin_Sons

Stock exhaust and stock carbs. Air filter is new

Gavin_Sons

I was wrong. It has a 4 degree trigger wheel.

fudgie

Does it 'feel' like is a fuel problem?

Did you get that info from the previous owner?

Got that info from the package I have. It has the stock wheel in it. Fudgie, it very well could be a fuel problem. Im going to pull the tank this weekend and check the hoses on the air box and fuel lines for kinks. I think it could use a good carb sync, and exhaust mod.  :cooldude:

Patrick

When and how did this problem start ?? Or has it done this as long as you've owned it ??  How does this 'lug' occur ?? Does it do it while easing in the throttle or just when you twist it as fast as your hand will go ?? Does this 'lug' [ which sounds like a hesitation to me] ever stop and the engine decide to pick up and start accelerating normally ??

salty1

I once had a car that did exactly what you describe about your bike at higher speeds. Found that some muffler packing had broken loose and was preventing adequate exhaust release at speed. Do you have an exhaust issue?  :-\ ???

Gavin_Sons

It has done it from day one. It does it in high gear weather I ease into the throttle or twist it as hard as I can. It will pick up speed fairly quick but not like I think it should. I'm getting ready to put truck stacks on and cut the baffles maybe, haven't decide yet. Maybe I'm asking too much out of her.

doubletee

An easy test to see if you're expecting too much is to find a friend with a Valk, get both in the same gear at the same speed, side by side, and then roll on the throttles. If your friend's acceleration is significantly greater than yours, then you might have a problem. But, maybe you're chasing a problem that really doesn't exist.  :-\

Make it another of similar model.  Since yours is an IS.  run it against an other IS.  Weaver and I both have them.

I am negotiating a wrench party at my house with BlackRams too.  If that happens... I'll let you guys know.

I'm thinking about buying some sync gauges. Maybe it just needs a good sync job. Let me know when  your having it. Ill atleast come hang out.

fudgie

Yea let me know to. I need my valves checked.  :cooldude:

I recommend caution in adding more modifications to the bike before taking care of the problems at hand.

You will simply be compounding the problems making them more difficult to cure.

But how do you know what the problem is without messing with it? Yeah you van narrow it down but you still dont know until you start trying to fix it. No one here seems to know, but I did get some good ideas.

Ricky-D

Take the bike and run it at that particular range for a number of minutes continuously without changing the throttle position.

Immediately then, and at the same time, turn the key off and pull in the clutch.

Coast to a stop and pull the plugs for inspection.

What you observe (the plugs) will greatly aid in determining what the problem could be.

I mean, have you done anything to determine the condition of the motor?

Ricky D is on the $, find problem 1st then do other things .Gavin, if your bike is starving for fuel it seems to me that it would do it in any gear as long as there was a big demand for fuel , such as taking off in 1st quickly . Narrow down the rpm range that it falters and see if it does it in every gear or 1-2 .go to that gear and hold it in that rpm range and see if it is a steady falter or fluctuates any . I rode your bike and it had great throttle response but I didnt Dog it . make sure you have no kinked lines , and if you cant figure anything out , call me and I will DOG it !! haha .really we can go for a ride see how they act together, switch bikes if you want . I can call Tony , Toby and Todd and we can all take turns outrunning  you ! Or just paint it black ! I would hit the interstate for a short jog and play around with different rpm ranges and gears see how it acts ! I'm just up the rd !

Gavin_Sons

Reed your back, im with you on the fact that it would be doing it in all te gears. I dont know, im all for going on a ride with you guys, we are thinking about riding somewhere next saturday with steve and diana. I was gonna call you and see if you and tony wanted to go.

Jabba

You can ride my IS too.  for a seat of the pants comparrison.
