I'm glad I'm not the only one with a garage that looks like that inside!!

I wasn't even gonna post a picture because it's not an example of an organized workspace!   

(on my behalf though, I did just move in with my girlfriend, and my garage at my previous place was probably 20x30 (and had rafter storage), and full, and hers is 20x20 (with a finished ceiling with a room above it - no rafter storage) and it was full too.  Threw out a LOT of stuff, some of which I'm already regretting because I needed it for something or another.)

I'm a Poor Boy.......all I have as a Garage for the bike is a 10'x10' tarp type shed.....wife bought it for me for Christmas one year.....took me two more years to get around to pouring a floor to put it on.......we only have a half acre lot and I now have 4 small buildings in the back.....she told me NO more!!!........











I had the most fun building my small 12'x16' woodworking shop.....it's insulated, has cable and it's own sub panel and a separate 20amp circuit on each wall for running woodworking machines.......I wired it up myself after helping an electrician friend wire a few houses......

I am in the process of building a 24x36 with 10 foot walls & scissors trusses for a future hoist. It will have in floor heat, white tin ceilings, painted osb walls, and lot's of storage.

My garage at present, it's under the house.  Soon as I put some $$ aside, I'm building a 30x40 detached garage.  Then the car goes back in.  The double doors in the back go into my cellar, where the bikes go during the winter.

A small peek of the mancave side of my garage. I have a 2 car where I'm standing and looking in at the attached 1 car sized mancave. Have A/C, gas heat, ceiling fan and 2 windows. The previous (idiot) owner of the house put carpet down, I assume to catch the oil from his HD, which it did pretty well. I have a couch for when I'm in trouble, microwave and workbench. The wall closest between the 2 garages is slathered in Tony Stewart and other Nascar memorabilia.

What depth floor you pouring?  You using metal in the crete?  Are you going to bring the grade up inside to the bottom of your PT sill?

How deep are your posts?  Are you using them as frost protection?  Are you backing them with dirt or stone?   Any footings under them?

Just a couple of questions, inquiring minds need to know.

I use the Dan Meyer approach.  This was over 5 years ago and it looks the same (or worse) today.  Some of the same junk is still in the same place.

OK, I don't feel so bad now. I might even take a couple pics one of these days. My shop is basically an oversized two-car garage, and for some reason my wife still thinks one side is for her car. At times when she walks through the garage, she will eyeball that invisible line down the center to make sure I'm not infringing on her half. She claims she uses her half to keep me in check. Without that, she says the garage would be full of a dozen half completed projects....all with two wheels. I hate it when she's right on some things.

The floor depth is going to be 4 inches. Plenty for it's use, nothing heavier than regular vehicles going in it. Will slope about 1.75" to a 12"x12" drain in the center. There will be wire and fiber in the concrete as well. I am getting quotes for the concrete as we speak.

The grade will be leveled using 304 gravel (compacted) to the bottom of the sill. The gravel will extended 12' out the front at the same grade to include a 10' concrete skirt in front of the garage. The new driveway to the skirt will then be sloped down to meet the existing driveway grade. I am doing the gravel myself as it will save me substantial cash. I plan on having the concrete contractor just come in for the pour and finishing.

The posts are dug to 48"; below the frost line in my area. Concrete at the bottom of the holes. They get backed in with dirt. The foundation such as this is common in my area because the cost is so much better than a block foundation. The builder gives a 50 year warranty on the foundation... not like either, I or the builder will be around then anyway. Also to protect the foundation and concrete from water intrusion, I currently have about 18 inches open on the outside of the foundation. I am going to run drainpipe on the uphill sides (back and south-side of the building) to pick up the downspouts and the drain. I am going to lay socked perf-pipe outside of the drainpipe to pick up any water that drains naturally to those sides of the foundation. I already have a perf-pipe running the length of the backyard to pick up drainage from the neighborhood behind me (higher) and will tie into that.

My Father did fiber in his garage floor. He said it was a mistake, it makes it hard to sweep. It has fiber hairs sticking up. I did not go the fiber route, I had them do rebar and steel mesh.

Sounds like you got a great plan, I'm jealous.   I'm sure it will last our life time.  My only suggestion would be to back the posts with 3/4 stone keeping the dirt away.

I used fiberglass in my garage floor 20 years ago, didn't use it in the cellar floor.

The cellar has spider cracks every which way, the garage is still solid.

Just what happened to me.

Update on the garage build! The builder is done, it's up to me now...






The trim and doors were put on as well as the fascia wrapped. We caulked and painted all the trim.






63 tons of stone and gravel were put down to level for the floor and 10 foot front skirt.




Ready for the floor pour.




The inside floor was finished and then sawed the next day. Couldn't pour the skirt because it was raining that day and Sandy was on the way. It rained for 8 days straight.





The skirt was just poured today.


On to the electrical, insulation, etc... etc.... etc....

Bike lift is planned, after electric, insulation, bench, pallet racks, etc, etc, etc. I am figuring sometime in the spring.

As far as the windows, I had them frame them in (one on each long wall) and I will install glass block windows. They framed it to a standard size for pre-made glass block.
