Ya, Valkahuna,

I too cringe at the thought of so many brain dead or thought challenged people legally carring loaded weapons and they barely know which end the bullet comes out, have no understanding of the velocity or performance of the round they are using. 

I am fortunate (as far as guns go) I spent 23 years in the military, 15 of those years was in special ops.  We were trained by military and civillian law enforcement, and I have fired several thousand rounds of all kinds of ammo.  So some of the things that guide my decisions are based on years of experience I know the average person wont have.

Yet, its still scarry to see these people handle guns, at the range, or in the stores. 

Kinda like being a motorcycle rider and knowing how many people are out there behind the wheel of a car that have no skill, little experience and pose a huge danger to themselves and all others.

At the end of the day you can only make responsible decisions for yourself and hope and pray that the other guys are getting some training and using some common sense.

The opposite of me would be someone that keeps their guns (if they even have any) unloaded, with locks up through the barrel then locked in a safe and the ammo in another room locked in a file cabinet.  It would take an eternity to respond to an intruder, might as well just call 911 and hope for the best.  I think an unloaded gun is nothing more than a neat paperweight.

For these reasons, I try to tone down my rhetoric when it comes to statements of how I would blast away if someone came through my door. It could be an honest accident, or as what happened to us, a neighbor's brother who had too much to drink , and who inadvertently walked into my home through the front door. While I would freely admit that had I been home, the individual would have been nursing multiple bruises, and justifiably so, if I fast forward to today, and my wife would have grabbed the gun (that at that time did not exist in my home due to small children) and blasted away with a warning shot to critical mass, well, you can see my point. Being young and drunk and stupid should not be a death sentence.

Very true but you do not know his intentions. He could have came over to rape your wife or worse. I would not set him down and ask 'why are you here.' I'd want my wife to do what she needs to do if she feel threatened in our home. Its the LEO's job to fig out why the guy is here, not mine.

I read a article a few months ago where a young college girl was drunk and standing in someone elses home bedroom. Owners woke up, saw her, and shot her. She is dead and no charges filed.

Last time I was in Gander Mountain I was horrified at the number of casual barrel sweeps. Not just customers but the guys behind the counter too. Finally just had to leave. They didn't seem to understand there was a problem.
