I helped blow up 24 cars today.....

The dealer I work for is doing this Cash for Clunkers program that the Government dreamed up. For those that are not familiar with it. You can trade in you gas hog vehicle for a new one and get up to $4,500 dollars off. Seams like a good idea right. Get a new car,get a nice price for your old one right.

Now this is what has to be done to these cars. First we bring them into the shop and drain the oil. Than move them back outside and pour in 2 quarts of this chemical. Run the engine at 2500 until it locks up. Then the local salvage yard takes them and shreds them. Of the 24 vehicles we did this to, at least half were still nice enough to be good used cars. Including a very clean 94 Ford full size truck with 72K on it and a 2000 Olds Bravada with 118k. Interior was spotless. Now they are all JUNK thanks to Obama and his tree hugging friends.

I read that the cost of this program was 4 Billion Dollars. That's Billion with a capital B. Now don't you guys think that 4 billion dollars could have been used for something more useful that destroying a few hundred thousand vehicle that the tree huggers deem bad for the environment........

I think it would have stimulated the economy more if they gave us all GM or Chrysler vehicle vouchers for the same amount of money, or more.  We could have kept them working at the plant and kept our initial money from going to those companies that spent our money unwisely and went bankrupt anyhow.   This cash for clunkers is a lame attempt to get old vehicles off the road and they claimed it would stimulate the economy.... but I don't think it will do all that much... maybe get rid of some old cars that might have been on their way out anyhow.   Who knows....   and I'm still more inclined to buy a Ford when I buy just because they declined the money.... and didn't have to take it.

I have a 98 GMC 3500 cargo van with 270k that I am starting to spend big bucks for maintenance. But in the governments wisdom I can only use it to buy at least a 3/4 ton pick-up or Van and no car replacement qualifies. The most it qualifies for is $3500.00 because no 3/4 ton or up vehicle offers a 10mpg increase over the GMC. Well duh, a 1/2 ton pickup or van would be a logical substitute and might offer a better fuel savings but they don't qualify. I expect nothing else from our government.

I found this interesting so I forwarded it to several friends and got this reply back from one who apparently sent it on to one of her friends. This lady works for AutoTrader.
I'm not doubting your story, It just sounds as though the trade-ins are not being handled the same way everywhere

Local dealer herre says that they pull the engine and transmission, crush those, and a local scrapyard can sell the rest as parts.

If they are going to auction as normal, somebody's gonna get sacked. A principle of the program is that the vehicals must be destroyed. They cannot remain drivable in this country and cannot be shipped out of the country.

I understood that they could not even be used for parts, but I've never seen that cited...

It's a horrible waste...and not valid from an environmental standpoint even, when you take into account the environmental impact of producing a new car.

The entity crushing or shredding the vehicles in this manner will be allowed to sell some parts of the vehicle prior to crushing or shredding it, but these parts cannot include the engine or the drive train."

I agree, but as with many government programs, people seem to find a loophole through which to crawl.

Yep. I have traveled many times to northern vermont where it is 662 miles from me. I have a 30 gallon saddle tank and I have about a 1/4 tank left when i get there. I did the math each time and it averages 25 mpg. I run good gas, platinum plugs, keep up with air in tires and my suspension is near perfect( Im a tech by trade). I love my ugly hooptie. wouldnt trade it for anything...
