I'm fitting a second hand cylinder head to a club member's bike. Yeah, he snapped the exhaust stud off on #1 cylinder and then chewed it off and finished it by snapping off an Easy-Out tap. (strange really, he's usually fastidious - must have been a bad day).

I took the head off, made a jig, put it in my big drill press, ... and burnt out three cutters.

Plan B: let's use a Pinwall head.

Took the cams out of both heads and both appear to have the same lift and grind (both measure 1.834 / 5 base circle to lift) and on my flat table seem to be degreed the same. However, the original cam is marked with an 'A' and a 'W'; the cam from Pinwall is marked with an 'E' and an 'S'.

The dilemma: are they the same?

Would you use the cam from the original bike in the second-hand head?  Or would you prefer to keep matching heads and cams?

If you'd like to see pictures, they are on my facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SteveB.akaSystemB

I would go with original cam in new (pinwall) head.  Looking at the photos, those appear to be foundry markings indicating which pattern or which serial from the pattern they were made from.  But I could be wrong. (it would be the second time).

Honda only made two cams a smog ( Calif) cam for 50 states and the regular cam for the rest of the  country.
Use the cam that cam from the old head and put it in the new head from Pinwill
