oil leak

after the last few rides I've had a small oil spot on the garage floor on the right side just about under the horn. finally got down under her today looking for a leak and have oil on the underside of the head cover and a small piece of gasket hanging out.

Looks like I need to replace that gasket any heads up on this don't want to mess anything up.

u sure its not the fork seal leaking and blowly back onto the engine? known to happen.

never heard of a valve cover leaking.

Has anyone adjusted the valves lately or otherwise removed the head cover?  It is pretty easy to get that gasket messed up if you arent careful.  Id try just straightening it out first

And add a dab [ technical term] of permatex at the 4 90º corners [at the camshaft] of the gasket.

If it holds a fluid, it can leak. Valks don't often have leaks, but, every now and again, one pops up.

Done any brake work lately?  If so, you might check the brake fluid...could it be dripping because it's over filled?

May want to check the inside of the fender.  With my last right fork leg leak the fluid would travel down the inside of the fender and then drip off the rear.  If it is the valve cover just be careful not to get too torque happy as they break pretty easily, or so I've been told....

Had a valve cover leak.  Bike had done alot of sitting and when I started riding her daily she started leaking on the valve covers and around the lower grommets (on the valve cover bolts).  Being cheap,(and after seeing the prices of new gaskets) I grabbed some thin stainless fender washers and put them on top of the grommets.  Had to add 2 to one of them. Made up enough of the shrinkage to seal everything up.  No leaks at all now and unless you look real hard and know what to look for, you can't even see them.  I did mine when I was adjusting the valves so I had the covers off anyway, but you could do it without removing them. Just one bolt at a time.  But you mentioned some gasket poking out?
Parts fisch on HDL and Honda Parts Direct has the parts, but hold onto your arse.

COVER, RR. CYLINDER HEAD

That is the cover gasket for a 1997 GL1500C AC,, I THINK they are all the same, someone jump in if they are not,, $19.58 from Partzilla. There is a rubber washer and a "mounting rubber" under each of the cover bolts, hopefully they are in good shape and can be reused,,, six of each adds up.

Just my two cents here.

Make sure all the oil is removed from the head and the gasket before reassembly. Permatex or a silicone gasket product is required in the four corners where the cam shaft bearing is. This area is shown in the shop manual.

Thanks all I ordered a new gasket and just incase new washers and rubber mounting. figured while I have it opened up to make sure I don't need to do it again.

got it all cleaned up, new gasket easy job and no more leaks. Took her out for a short ride and back home to check it then a long ride today. Next job new brake pads this weekend.

I suggest OEM pads if still using the OEM rotors. It's been stated here that problems have developed when going aftermarket pads on OEM rotors.
