Women........they just want us to listen.

Every couselor or Preacher I've ever heard has said that one of the problems with Men is that we are always trying to fix the problems our wives bring to us when what our wives really want is just sympathy and for us to listen.

It's hard, really hard advice to follow.

We (men) are problem solvers. Even if our solution has nothing to do with your problem.

Married almost 40 years.  You never want to use the "what" word.  Just nod and pretend you heard it.  If she looks at you funny, answer "yup".  Weeks later she may claim she told you something, and then answer "oh yes".  Communication is vital in a strong marriage.

Wrong.  They don't necessarily want you to listen, they want somebody to talk to.  I tell mine all the time that if she's telling me something that I will need to know, start out with "this will be on the test"  (then I run like hell).
