luggage rack

Been a standard rider for years, always loaded up a saddleman bag on the rack and went, never really had all the room (she) needed but got by. Well bought an Interstate last summer and taking it to its first Inzane. My question is how much weight can be put on the rack on top of the trunk of the Interstate. I know the more weight up there will bring up the center of gravity which will change the dynamics some, and having a bag up there will impede with opening trunk lid. Just wondered if anyone else has done similar loading and would like feedback and opinion on safe load limit. I actually believe my saddleman bag will hold more than the trunk, well at least I wouldn't have to worry about it falling out when I opened lid. My guess is saddleman loaded would be 15-20 lbs?

Keep the top of the trunk as light as possible. The trunk lid is ABS plastic. Obviously keep the heavy stuff in the side bags. Kuryakin makes a trunk rack bag that has a raincover built in.

I've loaded mine pretty heavy before. 30lbs of frozen boudain in an insulated bag with a little of ice to boot. It does make opening the trunk alittle hard and be careful of the straps that hold the lid in the open position. Your results may vary.

If you have a receiver hitch, get one of these racks and load it to your heights joy.

It seems like I got mine from JC Whitney or J&P Cycles in Anamosa, IA.

I believe the trunk says 20 lbs max, this would be the total weight, and that it wasn't realy designed for external weight.

But like RJ mentioned (I didn't look at it) get a cargo carrier, and mount it in the trailer tongue mount. I bought the aluminum cargo carrier from HF (sames one in Princess Auto), for a car. Used a carbid blade on a skill saw, and cut it to the same width as my Goldwing. Drilled out the pop rivets, and rebuilt it.



One caution. I'm sure the carrier will carry a lot of weight, but remember that the tongue weight of a pulled trailer would be a lot less. I don't have one, but I think people have mentioned something like 35-50 lbs.

Thanks for the info, I will error to the side of caution and load lite..the kitchen sink will have to stay home no matter what she says..lol

I have one of these and am very happy with it was under 40 bucks, now over 40,  and holds tons of stuff very well constructed velcro secured will NOT come undone very strong velcros.  Only thing is they fade after first year if left on all summer long like I do.

I wouldn't load up the top of the carrier more than say 15 lbs., if that, wouldn't take the chance on breaking the carrier.  I usually put items like toilet paper or paper towels or chips or bulkier lighter things like a jacket or two inside is all.

I have the same one, picked it and the rack and all hardware up a couple years ago (gave $99 shipped from Goldwing country I think) when I went to Vegas and we probably loaded it over what I should have but I would guess it was better part of 30lbs. No issues at all. I also added saddle bag racks and some small tank bags to each saddle bag rack we packed for a 5-6 day trip and never needed anything else, we over packed a bit...

Just take note that the trunk lid is a two part shell with a little space between. I drilled the holes and squirted some silicone sealant between the shells, let it set and drilled thru the silicone before mounting. It feels more solid and gives me peace of mind.

If your asking me.

I modified a regular auto replacement one from kragen/o'reilys.
Had to permanently modify the original base of the stock antenna and some hand grinding to make it fit using the original threaded insert of the stock antenna.
It seems like I had to actually take a hardened long threaded bolt and made an adapter to go inside the actual mount... Sorry it's been a long time since I did it.
If it's any help here are a couple of pictures that are a bit easier to see.





I figured if you could see the parts that look familiar it would help you figure out how to start making your own if your so inclined to do...
