I am looking for input/reviews for ultimate seats and/or mustang or..........???
I have a 1999 Valkyrie Interstate Trike. I am weighing heavily getting new seats.
Including the trunk backrest and driver backrest.

Help please.

I can only speak to the difference between OEM and Ultimate.
I sit on the Ultimate King Bigboy on my Tourer and love it.
My wife really appreciated the matching pillion as it added hours to what was comfortable to ride in a day.

If money is no object, I've heard (but not sat in) a Day-Long seat is about the best for comfort.

ValkyrieRider

I had a  Mustang seat on my Valkyrie when I bought it. I have went to a Ultimate now and love it. Both myself and my wife can ride long distances with out our ass killing us. The mustang seat was only good for a 2 hour span. I am glad I spend the money and upgraded to the Ultimate. I rode 830 miles back from the Run for the Wall this year in one day. The Ultimate seat was a life  saver.

First of all, welcome.   :cooldude:

I've had a bunch of different seats including Ultimate (King), Mustang, Corbin, OEM (both older and newer models).

If you're down to between just the two, you'd probably be happier with the Ulitmate.  You can order both the Mustang and the Ultimate with a driver's backrest, and both backrests are adjustable and can fold forward for dismounting the bike.

The stock/OEM seat (2000 model year and forward) and the Mustang are similar in style, width and size, but the Mustang will sit you higher and further back than an OEM seat will.  The Mustang is also a more firm seat.

The Ultimates come in three sizes to suit your size and build.  They are a very wide seat and have a sort of bulbus nose to it.  Some have reported that it can crowd the boys.   :D

Because of the width of the Ultimates, and if you have short legs, you may have problems with putting your feet down....but since you own a trike, that's probably not gonna be a problem.   ;)

Comparing the Ultimate King to the Mustang, I sit a tad further back in the Mustang than I did with the Ultimate King.

Corbin is an option, but it's a very firm seat and is narrower than most......and the backrests don't fold forward (at least the one I have doesn't).  A Corbin seat will sit you lower than OEM.

I actually like a Corbin as it seems to fit my rear pretty good, but I'd rather have a backrest that will fold forward......and a Corbin sits me a little further forward than I prefer.

The Russell Day-long seats are another option....people swear by them, but they're spendy.

Currently, I'm switching back and forth from a Mustang to a Corbin depending on mood and needs....usually the Mustang wins.

I really liked the Ultimate King I had.....and I reeeeeally wanted to keep it, but I had problems with it's width for two reasons.  I'm a tall person, but my legs, not so much.  I had problems putting my feet down.....and the rear passenger seat interfered with my saddlebag's lids opening (they're not OEM bags).
I can't help about the shape I'm in

+1 on BF's comments. I have had both the Mustang and the Ultimate. I have the lowrider. It may sit a little lower but since it is wider, I cannot sit flatfooted when stopped. I don't think Mustang offers a passenger backrest for the Interstate. The Ultimate seat is more comfortable but you can't really move around any on the seat like you can on others.

JC

Tried a set of Corbins but they didn't suit me. Sold my Mustang set after moving to the Ultimate Bigboy, and am very pleased with the upgrade. Mustangs are firmer than the Ultimate, and I found the Ultimate moves me forward a few inches compared to the Mustang, which makes it easier to reach the highway pegs.
Damn thing gives me the grins every time I get on it!

Former BMW Guy

I had the OEM....too hard
I had a Mustang....too wide.
I have a Corbin....good compromise.

Is the Corbin good for long distances?  How does it compare with the newer model Valkyrie Standard seat?  Sorry if this is hijacking your thread!
Thanks,

Mr Whiskey

Hey Dale, welcome! I'm on the Mustang & like everybody said it is firmer, sets you back alittle farther, & you can "slide around" in it pretty easy (which I happen to like). You can get it with a back rest for an IS, (mine's got one,) but that "chops" the nose down on the passenger pillion alittle.
I only have 2 complaints with it. One, I've got like a 36" inseam & it doesn't set me back far enough! I end up sittin' up on the back of the seat so the back rest is no use to me, never use it. Two, this thing sweats the far outta me! Man, I mean ya gotta carry Monkey Butt, or Baby Powder, or corn starch, or vaseline (haha),  sumthin' with ya all the time! Caint ride 30 miles before I'm gettin galled up without it.
Got lucky & scored a used Russel & loved it but it wasn't custom made for us & sets us at the wrong heights for cornering, (really screwed up my game, had to take it off). Most comfortable seat I've ever set in though, without a doubt!
Borrowed my Brothers Ultimate Big Boy for a few days & it's really nice, but way to far forward for me! He's lookin' for a King now cause he's as tall as me.
If $$ was no object, I'd be at Russel's havin' a seat made for us tommorrow!
Happy Hunting!

I concur with BF etc.
I had Mustang on the Red/White I picked up in the States in 07 rode 10000 miles in 5 weeks before bringing it home, nice seat but no where as comfortable as the Ultimate Big Boy on the Black/Silver that was waiting at home. Just this morning I picked up a 2000 model with OEM seats that I need to bring up to my spec, it has OEM seats...ouch, bad riding position, sits me to high.

The Mustang is more similar in size and style to the newer OEM seat than a Corbin is.  The main difference of a Mustang compared to OEM is that it sits you higher and further back...and is firmer.  A Mustang will sit you further back than any seat I've had....including the Ultimate King I had.

Corbin sits lower and is narrower than OEM and sits you a little further forward than an Ultimate King or the Mustang.......probably about the same as the newer OEM seat.....but definitely lower and narrower...and alot firmer.

I've had OEM's , Corbins and now ride with the Ultimates. I like the Corbins and they fit well for me, they are just to darn hard IMHO. I just couldn't handle long rides on the Corbins, felt like I was sitting on a concrete step after several miles. Now the Ultimates I can ride on them all day long.

Hook#3287

I have used a Mustang for over 10 years, it's given me good service and is still in great shape.

Got an Ultimate last Feb and have about 6K on it.  It's more comfortable than the Mustang and I can ride it longer w/o wanting a break.

My only complaint about the Ultimate is the backrest creeks, but I haven't had time to call Ultimate for some advice.

I am getting a little creeped out. Having a seat on the trike that I have not identified I went to Russels site. The backrest and my gut feeling are trying to tell me that it could be.................

What do you think?

First attempt at pics.

BIG--T

Like BF and others, I think I've tried them all except for the Russel and the Ultimates are the best for me. The Mustangs are not bad and the Corbin is way to hard for me. They don't call them Ultimates for nothing, and they will let you try them for 14 days- I don't know of any others that offer that.

I've heard so much about Russel, I think I might give them a try if I wear mine out! :cooldude:

Best thing in the world is a AIR HAWK if you want all day comfort. Didn't believe it until I got one. Racer Wholesale Parts has them for around $125.00. :cooldude:

BF,

Are you 100%?
I think the thing is kinda hard. Also the dull brown does not work real well for me. :-\

Woody, I'm pretty sure it's a Russel too.  I have no experience with them, but they may have modified some other seat (maybe they always do).

Why not email them the pics you have taken and ask them.... and ask if they will change it to whatever you want, and appx. cost to do so.  No cost to ask them questions.

I'm certain that diarrhea tan is better in the sunlight than black, but it's not working for me either.

if the ultimate big boy would sit you a little further back as the hard mustang ,that would be a great seat! :D
Enjoy the ride!

Nope, not a 100%, but pretty darn sure.  It's got the exact shape and size of the Russell's.

btw....I agree with Jess 100%.   ;)

Yes is the answer I got from Russel.

What now? I am gonna have to think about my next move. The bike is going in a show aug. 18th at the Chester Bird Legion in Golden Valley. I do not believe there is enough time to get it redone. Maybe enough time to spend 1000$ for the ultimate. However, If this is the dream seat........ :-\
I just am not crazy about the caramel colored seat. What do you all think about that ?

I have never sat on a Russel, but enough people think they're the best seat made to not discount their opinions.

I bet the seats on your bike cost a pretty penny. (but you will have a hard time getting a decent price for them, or selling them at all, because of the color)

I bet having the tan covering replaced with black, and perhaps some softer foam installed in the driver's seat (if that is what you want), and/or sending them your vital statistics so they can  evaluate the seat for your body (as they are known to do), would be far cheaper than buying new (or even used) Ultimates.  If you are still unhappy with them, you stand a much better chance of getting a good price for them in black.

If the bike show is important to you, wait for it to be over before sending your seats in (if they cannot promise to rework and return them before the show).

My first interstate came with a Corbin dual tour, leather covered, fancy stitched seat, with powder blue piping on all the roll-edges (presumably to match the powder blue dragons airbrushed on the bags)(and the Corbin receipt for nearly $1200).  It was beautiful but hard as stone.  Everyone that called on my sale add wanted to know if the powder blue piping could be removed or stained/painted black.  Most never called back, and I had to give them away for $350 or so.

GJS

One option is to take the seat to an upholsterer and ask them about recovering it or dying the leather (if it is leather).

Dying the Tan seat black may be the easy solution. (just don't ever wear what pants!)

Good luck,

GJS

There might be another member around you that might let you borrow another seat set just for your bike show.

And/or, post a thread on the General board.  Don't hurt to ask.

Or....post a thread on the Classifieds asking if anyone wants to swap.  "Diarrhea tan" might just be what someone else is looking for.   ;)

http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/pp345/58Woody/ultimateseat935.jpg

That's the one! Mine are plain with just the holes....no grill. I think they must be aftermarket and can't find them.

GJS

The speaker grills were a Honda option.
Not very common, and were cheap when availible.

Saw a set go on eBay a couple of months ago for $225.
Much more than the original price.

I've seen them up close and I just don't see the attraction.
I would'nt pay $50 for them, even if I could get them.

They look better from above then they do from the side.

Cheers,

Got my seat Wednesday eve. Looks awesome But the Queen sat on the back and hated it :'( ??? :(. I knew that was coming. I had to do some fab to move the trunk back. 1 1/4 inches. We will give her a ride on test this evening.
I sat on the back seat when I first installed it. I knew that it was tight. She is not more than 115#. The backrest needed to be further back. WTF I was thinking I would be sending it back or dumping her. (just kidding) The seat stays! No seriously I had to move the trunk back. I haven't even rode on the seat . I really pray that she is happy with the change. She agreed that it looks Cool.

                                                               Wish me luck, Thanks
