Freak accident kills one as deer sent airborne by car hits motorcycle

TOWN OF BROOKFIELD -- A motorcyclist was killed Sunday when a nearby car hit a deer, sending it airborne and into the path of the motorcycle.

Madison County Sheriff's Deputies say it happened around 5:33 a.m. on State Route 8 in the Town of Brookfield.

Investigators say 31-year-old Phurba Tamang, of Utica, was driving south on Route 8 when she hit a deer that entered the roadway from a cornfield.

The deer was sent airborne and hit a motorcycle driver heading north on Route 8. The motorcycle driver was ejected from his bike and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies later identified the driver of the motorcycle as Cyle Chesebro, 49, of West Edmeston.

State Route 8 was closed until shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday.

"Dang" Talk about if only I was 20 seconds later leaving the house. Patted Momma one more time on the butt, gave the dog another min of love. Deer are very very scary!!

The AAA compiled this list of Maryland and Virginia encounters with deer in which a motorcyclist was killed:

In August, a 46-year-old rider from Harrisonburg, Va., was thrown from his Harley-Davidson moments after hitting a deer in the middle of the road, state police said.

In May, a 55-year-old motorcyclist was killed after a deer dashed across Route 460 in Bedford County, Va., state police said.

In September 2011, a Maryland motorcyclist was killed and his passenger was critically injured when a deer that jumped into the road in Glen Burnie caused a three-vehicle crash.

In August 2011, a 50-year-old Arlington County motorcyclist died after his Harley collided with a deer on Compton Road near Balmoral Forest Road in Fairfax County, county police said.

In August 2011, a 48-year-old motorcyclist was killed and his 55-year-old passenger was injured when they hit a deer on eastbound on Route 702.

In April 2011, a 37-year-old motorcyclist from West Ocean City was killed when his motorcycle hit a deer in Bishopville, Md., state police said.

In May 2010, a 54-year-old Frederick County man died after his motorcycle struck a deer in Clarke County, according to Virginia State Police.

I love to ride this time of year with the exception of corn fields just for that reason. Here they plant about 6' from the road. You have no warning whatsoever. I tend to ride with more caution until the corn is picked.

Thats terrible. Many folks don't think of New York being a deer state. We gotts a bizillion of them ! And the herd keeps increasing, which I like. It reduces the time spent in a tree, but, they cause a lot of accidents thats for sure.

I"ve  seen a lot more this year than last. On my way to and from work I ride past several corn fields and wooded areas. Guess I'm gonna hafta slow down a bit cause I don't want to make it on that statistic.

i've seen a lot of dear while riding.  i've had a couple close calls also.  thankfully haven't connected yet, but probably will sooner or later.

Deer are one of the dumbest animals on the planet. They rank right up there with squirrels.

We have the same problem out here in AZ. Except they're wild burros and they weigh 600-800 lbs. Almost hit one late at night out in the desert.

Several years ago a car coming towards me hit a deer and sent it airborne.

I realized that the car didn't see the deer and was going to  hit it, so I had time to react even before it happened.

Still it was strange to watch the deer sliding down the road just inches from my left floor board.

The closest I've come to being a deer accident statistic was a number of years ago. I was just riding home from the airport minding my own business when this deer with a decent set of handles came onto the road in the middle of a blind sweeper. He ended in the middle of the road so I started around behind him, when he decided to go back where he came from. He jumped and I thought he was going to end up right in my lap. He jumped over the front fender and somehow didn't get into the windshield.

My neighbor's kid while still at home hit a cow in the middle of the road, does that count?   :2funny:

Explain that one to the insurance company?  I guess it was a herd of cows that got loose and all were standing in the middle of the road over a blind curve/hill and was too late to slow down with nowhere to go side to side.  Good news, I guess?,  is the farmer had to pay for the damage to the vehicle since the cows were loose and not penned up.

Same thing happened to me besides nicking a small doe with my truck's bumper years ago doing no damage,  I hit head on with my car at the time going 60 mph an old German Shepherd dog couldn't avoid had an oncoming car come at me didn't see the dog in the middle of the road.  Did 3 grand in damage wasn't too happy but the dog's owner thru home insurance had to pay for my car damage since the dog was loose.  Probably a good thing since the owner said the dog was like 15 years old and blind and deaf, wanders off a lot,  and on it's last leg anyways, but surely didn't like dragging off the road what was left of it, pretty gross and sad.

My two sons hit a cow in the dark coming home from basketball practice a number of years ago.  Totaled the car.  Hind end of car on windshield, with front half coming around on the passenger side.  I think the RH pillar kept the cow out of the front seat with them.

You could tell they had their seat belts on.  The only place on their shirts that was not covered in cow doo doo was the band under their seat belts!  LOL   ;D

Son in passenger seat had to get about 100 small pieces of glass picked out of his face and neck.  Other than that, they were OK.  Car totaled.  Cow dead.

on the cow thing... several years ago i worked for a salvage auction (we sold totaled cars mostly for insurance companies mostly to salvage yards) and we got in this 94 dodge intrepid that had hit a cow. idk if you remember the intrepid but they were very pointy in the front apparently what happened was the guy came around a curve and hit the cow it rolled up onto the windshield smashed it and split in two knocked the guy out cold so he drove 100 yards into a field. i can only imagine what it was like when he came to and the car was full of cow guts and crap and he was covered from what we heard needless to say that car went to the waaaay back part of the yard lol.

Wow, I had exactly the same thing happen to me last year.  Heading into town on a 2-lane, an oncoming car hit the deer and sent it flying low across my lane.  It hit my right front.  Fortunately, I was in my car, and there was no apparent damage.  Just a great deal of blood and stuff.

We see deer practically every day out here.  We really need to allow hunters to reduce the population.
It could be worse.  In the Black Hills last week, I had an elk cross the road 100 yards ahead of me.  I certainly would not want to tangle with one of those.  I'll leave the bison alone too.   :D

Uggh, my biggest fear.  I try not to ride on roads with lots of brush and cover around dusk, and to always look through corners and the surrounding brush.  Other than that, what can we do?  I gotta admit I often get a queasy feeling in my gut when I ride over a fresh blood stain on the road.
