Guys claiming military service with no service ever.  Guys who served stateside only doctoring a copy of their 214 to reflect overseas service, combat service, valorous decorations, using an IMB Selectric with the wrong font ball.   Guys claiming PTSD, who never served in combat... because their drill instructor demeaned them in front of their peers, or that they were raped by all of the fellow boots in their barracks (like 50) but I never reported it at the time, or because they read about many accounts of combat in the newspaper, or because they once saw a dead body somewhere, or because they witnessed nuclear test explosions in the Pacific from a ship on the horizon, or because he accidentally killed his fellow MP/SP in a quick draw competition with live ammo.   Guys claiming the Army caused them to be a child molester.  Guy claiming a skin disorder of his genitals, sending in a 1-hr video of him showing his junk, and a dermatological exam report saying the only thing wrong was friction burns from excessive masturbation.  Pilots/aircrew claiming Agent Orange exposure from flying over Vietnam dropping bombs (B52s out of Guam).  Guys claiming Agent Orange exposure who never got closer to Vietnam than Yankee Station, Okinawa, Manilla, Japan.  Thousands of guys/gals on means-tested pension failing to report all income from every source as required.  Guy going for increase in his service-connected psoriasis scrubbing his body with fuel oil and steel wool hours before his VA examination.  Guys seeking service connection for self inflicted gunshot wounds.  Guy seeking service connection for motor vehicle accident injuries, and the police report/records showing him convicted DUI, and vehicular manslaughter.  Philippine girls marrying ancient WWII Philippine vets in the days before death to secure pension benefits.  A Philippine family who cut the service connected deceased veteran's thumb off, and used it to secure pension benefits for 15 years after the veteran died (in the PI signatures are so suspect, only thumbprints are used for validation purposes).  A gay vet filing for service connection for chronic yeast infection.  Thousands of claims for back injuries during a single enlistment decades ago (with nothing in the service medical records)  with a well-documented  history of post-service back injuries on civilian jobs, successful workers comp claims paid.  Guys refusing simple medical treatment (not invasive surgery) to improve service connected injuries/disease because it could result in a reduction of monthly compensation benefits.

David Berkowitz (Son of Sam) filed for service connection for PTSD (from his one noncombat enlistment in US/S Korea) in preparation for his insanity defense at his trial for murder. (denied)

These, and many more, of course are a (large) minority of veteran's claims.  But when the G creates a free money system, tens of thousands of people will sign up for it, who do not qualify for it, and some people actually lie to secure free money.  And many of them get paid anyway.  Sound familiar?

It is clear that all the social welfare benefit systems in place have huge bureaucracies only interested in ever expanding their client bases, with little interest in policing let alone prosecuting fraud.  Just like the criminal justice system, when you start apprehending and punishing people for criminal conduct, and it gets good press coverage, it goes a long way to deter others from filing fraudulent claims.  With a dismal record of enforcing fraudulent claims, why not lie and cheat? Everyone else does it, very few are caught, and fewer yet are prosecuted.  But it feels good and involves little work to give away free money, while it feels bad to call people liars and takes hard work to investigate and successfully prosecute fraud.

In my 18 years at the Board of Veteran's Appeals, I had one of the lowest allowance rates of any staff attorney (300 or so when I left) (I also had a very low number of successful appeals of my decisions to the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims).  In drafting an appellate decision, it generally took 3-4 times as long to carefully study the often huge, multi-volume claims folders write a 15-30 page (appeal bulletproof) denial than a 3-7 page allowance (which are almost never appealed). Because of the (well known) ever increasing backlog of veteran's claims and appeals, we were brought under ever increasing pressure to decide more cases, quicker, and put on punitive quota systems that took no account of individual case complexity (we will discipline, then fire you if you don't do more cases), enforced on a weekly basis, year round.  The obvious result was a continuing increase in appeals allowances, since it took less work, and allowed you to keep your job by making the required numbers.  I never allowed appeals to save my job, and went from a recognized  performer with many awards for quality writing, to a low-end producer, scorned for slow work.  The merit of my decisions was rarely criticized, it was not relevant to quota enforcement. So, like may others, I took a walk.

Yes sir: for 5 hits, and scars and metal still in me, I collect a fine sum of $1,068 tax free a month.

I have had my ass hauled up to the VA Horse Pistol 3 times to re-verify my scars and other Bull crap.     I changed the last time, they added PTSD, so I figure in about 2 or 3 months my ass will be hauled up there again and be tested.

Wonder why that never happened to the little Prep boy who sprained his ankle.

I guess the obuminater wants to pat em both on the ass.  Mom and Dad taught me DO NOT claim what IS NOT mine. I've been in line for the unemployment insurance and been denied while folks that hadn't even worked were approved.  I've seen Sand Box vets at the Poplar Bluff Mo. V A hospital and listened to their stories as to the why of them being turned down and they are missing one or two or more limbs.  The "system" is upside down backasswards and the folks that actually NEED the help ain't gittin it.  And the 2 listed in this post are gaming the "system" and getting away with it.  And DON'T even get me started on the worthless asswipes that took off for Canada and then got PARDONNED.  Myself as a Vietnam vet I don't have a lot too complain about.  But some of these folks coming home from the Sand Box- RIDE SAFE.

ANYONE injured to the point of disability while on active duty in the military deserves a disability benefit.  Combat related injuries resulting in disabilities, especially loss of limb or function (sight or hearing) deserve compensation (and I believe at a higher rate).  Asshats like the two mentioned in this thread and the rest that are gaming the system, well lets just say I'd like to see a few combat vets who have seen the woest of it administer what they think is appropriate justice.

I also don't agree with the Lost Valor(?) position our judicial system has taken.  People who claim to be Medal of Honor winners or Purple Heart reciepients that are not or never even served sicken me.  What ever happened to character and integrity?

RJ, I salute you, Sir.  And thank you for your and your father's sacrifices.  And to all the other members who have served or may have lost family members, Thank You!  Your country owes you better than you have recieved.  Unfortunately, our government and some of it's elected officials seem to think that their service entitles them to better benefits than you brave men and women get.  It's sad .
