Hello ,

Thanks to John U  for letting me know where to get a trigger wheel ( wingstuff) .

DO most Brands STamp on the wheel the Spec 4 deg or 6 deg etc ?

what can I expect to see written on the stock wheel .

reason for my questions is my bike gets crazy gas mileage only hit reserve once @ 155 miles
I've seen as high as 172 miles and still not hit reserve . Although most fillups been right at
4.2 gal ( filled to the brim ) I suspect reserve was right around the corner.

My thinking is maybe the previous owner added a Trigger wheel already.

Maybe I'm not getting any more mpg  then most. (but I do see many low mile per gal post)

between 36 and 40 steady . (around town)
Took first trip this weekend ( hwy 89a back way to Prescott Arizona from Phoenix basically.
I went 119 miles to first fuel stop and added 2.6 gal gas. Which is roughly 45 mpg  2up

Maybe this bike is just showing off cause basically new 5k miles when bought it, now 6k on it.

If I was getting that kind of mileage, I'd leave it alone & just ride 7734 out of it.

I get a solid 35 or 36 on the road & 30 to 34 in town.

I hear ya RJ , thinking the same , but my thinking was maybe I have a Trigger wheel already installed
wanted to know if it says 4-6 degree on an after market wheel.

I've not seen an aftermarket trigger that has not had the amount of advance stamped on it.. The originals aren't marked.. I can't remember though if you're able to see those markings without removing the crank pulley.. I guess the fuel mileage on these monsters vary a lot.. Apparently it all isn't due to the right hand.. Both of mine got good mileage, at least I thought they did.. The 'hot' bike[sold it] would get 30 and the stock bike gets 40+..

I have an original won off ebay and it has on it W-004

This is a 4 deg wheel

Patrick

You have an original Honda trigger that has W-004 stamped on it??  You're going to make me go look thru my STUFF now aren't you??

Patrick,

Let me back up on what I said the ebay add mentioned my trigger wheel I won was an original and it has Out stamped on it along with W-004
I can only assume the seller sold me an original as I am new to all this ?alk parts and upgrades so I'm in learning mode big time.

I always thought that the W-004 was a 4 degree wheel which is supposed to go on the I/S to give an extra 4 degrees of timing advance over the standard wheel.  I have never seen a 6 degree wheel, so I don't know how they are marked, but I understand that they are intended for the standard and the tourer.  I put the 4 degree wheel on my I/S and maybe it helped it with 2-3 extra
mpg.  Other than that, I couldn't tell much difference...JTL

2 to 3 extra MPG will do for me, speed kills you know  ;D

So what is the difference here 6 deg for I/S and 4 deg for standard/ tourer? They both have same engine only difference I have seen is just cosmetics or am I missing something internal?
I plan on installing the 4 deg on my Tourer as I've heard these engines don't like a lot of advance timing anyhow. Main purpose is a little more low end tourque and mpg gain I'm just a back roads cruiser type.

The Interstate has a different ICM that advances the timing a bit to begin with.  Thus the recommended trigger wheel for the Interstate is 4 degree while the standard/tourer can handle a 6 degree.

Thanks for that info.
So would I be waisting my time by adding the 4 deg to my tourer over the 6 deg?

I don't have the answer to that question.  I assume a 4 degree wheel will help you out,  a 6 degree obviously adds a little more advance and speaking from experience I liked my 6 degree and it gave me 35-40 mpg with some low end oomph.  Having said that I now have a Dyna 3000 with the stock wheel and I like it.  It is up to you.

This is my 6 degree trigger wheel.  I don't know what brand, but you can see the tips are round instead of square like the OEM wheel and it says 006 on the outside.  It worked well with the stock ICM but it didn't like the Dyna 3000 so I put the OEM wheel back in.

22,, There is another fairly recent post about this same issue.. I explained the difference it that post.. These engines do not like a lot of ignition advance.. The 004 wheels are 4 degree advanced over factory.. The 006 are 6 degrees over factory.. The IS and the STD/Tour ICMs have difference advance curves so the reasoning was the 004 wheels go on the IS and the 006 wheels the Std/Tour.. But,,The 004 wheels will work just fine on a STD/Tour,, I prefer it..Some of these engines develop a very high-pitched vibration with excessive advance and some become hard to start in cool weather..

Thanks to all

I think it is clear now seems after market wheels are stamped I fugured as much  now to check mine

I forgot to mention, I have the exact same wheel and have been wondering if I should install it with the dyna 3000.

Let me know what you ended up doing.

... and some become hard to start in cool weather..

Have noticed mine IS  was a bit harder to start when cold since installing a 4 deg TW. I was leaning more on the clean up the pilots end of things. So that is a thought I had not considered. We'll see how things are after I do the carbs. Thanks for the tip.  :cooldude:

What you all have failed to notice is that the aftermarket TWs are solid, while the OEM Honda TW is slotted. If yours is slotted then rest assured that it is the original. The OEM TWs are all the same for all models and all years.

Before buying or installing a 4 or 6 degree TW, just remove the cam belt cover and take a flashlight and have a good look. You may have to remove the front pulley to be sure. But don't waste your money before you know what you have to begin with.

I have an I/S that I installed a 4 degree TW on and it did seem to improve my mid-range performance.

However I also have a 98 standard and I did the "simple ECT Mod" and I feel that is a far better way to get the mid-range performance and overall increase in fuel milage. The parts to do the simple ECT Mod cost less than $5.00 and you can do the job in fifteen minutes.
