with the discussions recently about what is and is not torture these links might be helpful.
however they are written with the bias of NBC, but some glimmerings of the truth may be seen.

"walling" slamming a detainee up against a wall (designed to give way, intentionally flexible to prevent injury) was ripped in the press because once they had access to detainees they claimed they were slammed into a concrete wall head first. (never happened, remember it's A-ok to lie to non believers in their religion)

waterboarding was the most controversial, and effective way to get KSM to talk.

how do the interrogators know when they were telling the truth? ask questions you allready know the answers to. once you start getting the right answers, start asking questions you don't know the answers to. simple really....

Torture ? I think the fellas back in the dark ages and during the crusades knew all about torture. They were pretty creative. Some even continued into the early years of this country. So, do I think something as mundane as water-boarding is torture ? Nope.

Ever been waterboarded?

Yes, it's a form of torture. But like all things there are levels severity. If done skillfully the physical effects are temporary so one can physically recover 100%. John McCain can not say the sme about the torture he suffered. So, are there forms of torture that I find more acceptable than others? Yes and waterboarding is one of them. Sometimes in the interest of national security you must do things that might otherwise not want to do.

It will give you a very good idea of what torture is.

one of the links highlights the methods used, from the size and height of the board to the amount of water and time limit  it is dribbled. this not to be confused with water torture. in the start of the movies 'salt' where the north koreans shoved a water hose down angelina's throat and pourd a gallon or two down her gullet, then they kicked her in the stomach to get it back out. that IS torture and very effective at inflicting pain. it was used by even the brits in WWII.

bush went to the DOJ and from the lawyers they gleaned about 20 methods for enhanced interrogation. they culled it back to 20, because some of them were considered too harsh even for terrorists.
