My theory is: once a smoker, always a smoker....  even if ya quit... it's one day at a time.  One cig from back into it....   Been smokin' 45 years...quit one time for 5 years..... I LIKE it....  But a week ago I got one of the new fangled E-cigs and have been using it ....  Went from 1 1/2 packs a day to 5 cigs in the past week...... and none in the past 3 days....  don't miss them!!!!  the e cig meets the tactile, oral, and habitual habit that comes with smoking.... without the smoke.....
Feeling pretty good about this!  Still getting the nic hit, without the other bad side effects.
HEY  ... Not a cold turkey.... but it is a good thing for me!

Hey, I'm sending good thoughts your way. I finally laid them down after 35 years and have been smoke free for over 2-1/2 years. It's not easy but it is well worth it. Good luck to ya.  :cooldude:

It's pretty easy to quit. Just use that Chantix and find some one to hit you on your motorcycle with a tractor and bust up your ribs so you can hardly breathe.  Simple.

When I smoked, I reeeeealy like smoking.

My last one was on Jan, 6th, 1995.

Haven't had one puff since.

Had smoked non-stop for about 22 years up to that point.

Got sick one day...bronchitis.  Didn't smoke for a couple days.  Funny...at the time, I hadn't realized that I hadn't had one in a couple days and apparently didn't miss it.

Said to myself....self?...if you can go without a cigarette for a couple days, you can go without longer than that.

Had about a half pack in the house at that point.  Flushed 'em down the toilet.

Good God man....it was tough....but it was truely one day at a time.

I even had the occasional urge up to 10 years later.  Granted, they were rare, but they still happend....10 year later.

The urges do go away permantly though.....haven't had the urge to have a smoke in years.

It really is one day at a time.

I reeeeealy liked smoking.  If I can quit, you can quit.

I'm pullin' for ya.   :cooldude:

Hey Mark.    I quit 31 years ago cold turkey and have not looked back except for this firkin O2 hose.

I smoked UNfiltered Lucky Strikes for 41 years.

Lucky Strike was a Red/Green colored pack back then.

Lucky Strike Green went to war and the pack was red/white.

In all that time I never smoked a filtered cigarette.

If I couldn't get Luckies I got the LONG Pall Mall's.

I smoked when I was playing football.   Coach caught me and set my arse on the bench for a week.    He told me I catch you again it will be 2 weeks, and if I catch you the 3rd time, you are off the team.    I don't care how good of a quarterbak you are, you will be done.   He never caught me again.   There was 3 of us football & baseball smokers.

If I still smoked 3 packs a day . . .    and cigs cost $5.50 per pack. . .   and I quit cold turkey.  :cooldude:

By the end of 12 months I would have saved enough money to pay cash for a $6000 motorcycle!!     :cooldude:

It took me a decade to discover a very simple truth about cigs -

THE ONE AND ONLY WAY TO QUIT IS COLD TURKEY !!!!!

Once I realized this, all it took was 2 years of suffering to get completely off nicotine. If I had not, I'd be taking a dirt nap instead of typing this. I lost a couple of good friends to lung cancer and decided I didn't want to go like that.

Gavin_Sons

I work with guys that are heavy smokers, 3 or 4 packs a day. We moved into a brand new building a couple years ago and cant smoke inside. They picked up e cigarettes and 3 of the guys are completly off cigarettes.  I smoke when I ride and use chewing tobacco most other times. I do all the stuff that is bad for you.

I quit on November 22, 1963, cold turkey, oh yeah.  I was smoking my wife's bent, ash tray, lipstick smeared Viceroy butts for another three days and then stopped. I can look back on it and laugh now.

Unfortunately, my wife didn't quit soon enough. She died at 67 of COPD.

Keep it up Mark, It is important to quit.  My hat is off to you for doing it.

It's certainly not easy, but if you decide that it's what's best for you you can do it.  I started smoking in the 3rd grade, was up to a pack a day by the 8th grade and when I gave them up at 35 yrs old I had been smoking 3 packs a day for years.  People tried to convince me to quit, the cost of cigarettes started going up, I smelled like tobacco all the time, etc., but what I realized is that only one person could make the decision, and it had to be my decision.  I quit cold turkey, and like others, I actually dreamed about smoking for years.

After having quit for a full year I figured out I had probably saved enough to buy a new motorcycle, so I bought a new Honda V-45 Magna.  Much better than a cigarette.

Mark, if you could follow R.J. or me for a day you would know real quick what smoking is doing to you. I quit in 95 and thought I was doing great ! COPD kicked me ass in 2010. Thinking I was out of the woods was wrong. Did not see it coming until one day I could not take a big breath. Down hill every since. When I say "down hill" I mean down hill. I had some bad thoughts for a while. I have a wonderful wife that has been my life line. Bottom, line Mark, listen to PRO`S

Mark, it is not one day at a time.  It is 5 minutes at a time for a while.  When ya want a smoke look at your watch and say to your self, "5 minutes isn't very long".  Soon, those 5 minute stretches get longer and longer.  I quit in '82 with an open pack of Winstons in my shirt pocket and a lighter in my pants pocket.  It takes will power.  Nothing else is more powerful than your mind.  (it also helps to be a little bit stubborn.)  Stay with it, my friend!...Jim

Hang in there Mark.  Like RJ I used to smoke Luckys and Pall Malls, quit many years ago but the wife kept on.  She smoked Pall Malls until about 8 years ago when she had to have a quadruple bypass.  That finally convinced her it would be prudent to quit, and she did cold turkey like I did so many years ago.  Its hard, but when you decide to, it can be done.

I like the Fin cartridges available at Walmart.  The bold ones are the closest to a smoke I've tried.  Others I've tried are too light.

And now there is a push here to ban these e-cigs. I'm not a smoker and have not yet been near an e-cig so I don't know whether they stink or not.

There are a bunch of ways to quit. IF you don't want to quit, simple, don't. Fear like in my case, when the doctor said: You have "cancer". Too late as far as I was concerned at the time but I quit. That was 24 years ago and guess what, he was wrong, I didn't have cancer. Cold Turkey: tough but determination and the "WANT" to quit has to be there. Chantix, I have no idea about but some of my friends have been successful with it so it must work for some people. There is that Nicorette (sp) not sure how that does??

Like em, don't quit, but that was what my folks said up until the day my dad died of a massive heart attack and my mother died of lung cancer. On the flip side, people that never smoked a day in their lives die the same way. Some of it also depends on your work environment as well. Too much exposure to anything isn't good either.

You are never lost if you don't care where you are!
