I have no idea how you guys handle that kind of weather - growing up and living in the deep south my entire life other than my time in the service -- I can't imagine dealing with sub zero temps -- heck, I hate it when it's below 60 - I'd much rather have it be 100 EVERY DAY !  Guess I'm just a wimp, or maybe just spoiled.  We're in the middle of a so called cold spell here in Florida where I live, so it's not getting much over 55 for the next 10 days !

If things go according as planned - in a few months I'll have my man cave cleaned out enough to where I can keep both of my bikes in there - listen to music, watch TV, and clean and work on the bikes -- I closed our garage in years ago and do have it vented out for air and heat -- BUT I need to have a new insulated garage door put in and re insulate all the walls and attic !  The wife told me to do whatever I wanted back there -- It's quite cluttered right now, but won't be for long !

On the flip side of that, however, you can bundle up good and go outside and survive in cold weather but in the middle of an Arkansas blast furnace summer you might not be able to enough off fast enough to avoid a vapor locked heatstroke. Let's face it: miserable is miserable.

Too cold to ride here today at the current 12F (7 a.m. CST) with the high headed to 39 but it's supposed to be around 65 by Sunday so those of us who haven't come down with pneumonia might get in a ride before Monday when the high is forecast to be 35.

At least up there winter is consistent.

G-Man

With all the snow and ice still on the road and the temps not going above 10 degrees, I'm surprised OSS hasn't plugged himself in and come knocking on my door to go for a ride.   :D

Oh right, just saw a post that he was out west.  Well, hope you're warm, pardner!

-7 this morning and the sun is out but it won't last.  More snow is on the way.

Yep, currently -13 here, but we are below zero literally every night in December and January, with regular daytime highs always below freezing.   :-\

Yep, that's why I moved from Indianapolis to Tucson in 1977 and never looked back. Only time I've been back in the winter was in February 2008 when my mother died. 20 degrees and snow flurries! Got outta there as soon as I could.

Us Southerners will be pissing and moaning about the humidity along with the heat...I've ridden out west where you get the extreme heat but not the humidity and I'll take that kind of heat any day over the swampy heat.

Maybe a few of you need to move NORTH to warm up. It's chilly here in southern Ontario Canada but nowhere near what you guys have in the NE and only about 2" of snow on the ground here presently...  ;)

Valkernaut

Pointed the IR thermometer at an empty 50gal steel drum first thing this morning. It read 0*. I thought that was cold until I looked up absolute zero and realized it was 460*(almost) warmer than that on the barrel!!

When I was doing time in the USMC in 1950, I was damn glad I came from the North.    I was in the Chosen and fighting right beside Southerners who had their feet and hands frostbitten.

Me being pretty used to cold weather, I got out of the Chosen Trap without a hitch.

Not so lucky the 2nd tour over.   Setting on the 38th and in Reserve, we had just come off the hill 5 days prior. Got the crap blasted out of me.    5 Purple Hearts from March 9 to August 9th.    August 11th I was on a Medical plane headed for the states in a FULL body cast.    Finally made it to the Naval Hospital in Chicago, they gave me 90 days of convelesant leave, 30 days at a time.

When they released me for duty I was headed to San Francisco for MP duty.   Finished my time there.   Got discharged, went back to Iowa and 36 days later I was a CHP in the Academy in Sacramento, CA.

more snow here last night and this morning. Temps finally came up to around 25 but they say were suppose to get another arctic vortex next week again. Cant wait to get all this snow melted off and back out on the valk.

Skinhead

It'll be a while before I'm out riding.  The record cold temps, salt, and plows have destroyed the roads up here, it'll be late sprong before they get the holes filled in, and the frost heaving will undoubtedly do more damage.  There is no question, I will be getting the hell out of here when I retire.

At least I can look at the Valk...

just got back from the store the wind is so strong and the snow blowing that it looks like a blizzard some of the roads are trying to drift.

cookiedough

I have went outside now twice to unbury my garage door with 1 1/2' drifts  packed in front in last 4 hours.  I'm giving up until Wednesday when this crap subsides, let it drift does no good to go out in negative whatever with 20-30 mph winds every 3-4 hours.

Kids will for sure have NO school on Monday and Tuesday that is a given I think anything -30 or -35 wind chill and almost all schools close down.

Too bad employers don't do the same!  :tickedoff: :2funny:

High winds and ice are the worst not so much the actually temp w/o windchill figured in.  I'll take 2' of snow over high winds and ice in the winter.

Us too right now. 22" of snow since Thursday night and blowin like hell. Wind speed past 2 days was a sustained 22 MPH. Guess seeing to drive was a little tough. Colder than a well diggers augar and not looking for any improvement until tonight. My brother said: "this is a good ol fashion Michigan winter". I said ya, but it hasn't been like this in years and I was a helluva lot younger.
This winter has been longer than normal but it will all go away by August.  I plow 27 driveways and 4 commercial jobe. I have plowed more this  year than the past 3 combined.    :coolsmiley:

I had to give in and talk to my neighbor to see if he would come over with his tractor and 7 foot blower to clean out my driveway.  Drifts were 2+ foot deep all the way to the road (200+ foot driveway).  He he was finished in 10 minutes or so.......we shot the breeze longer than it took to clean out the drive ;D ;D

Thanks for posting the link Mike.  Just like "The Lone Survivor" movie, there are many heroes here in the USA.  RJ, surely is one of those.
Thank you RJ and thanks to all of the service men and women, both past and current.
