The Elk needed to be put down....  the incident happened on the side of the road so it could very well have been a jogger or something that got hurt badly.

I guess I don't understand something here!!!! So the elk head butted with the photographer, if the elk wanted to do some damage he could have, but to me it seemed he wanted to play.  I have had on a few occasions where wild animals come up to me and checked me out.  Apparently didn't find me to be a threat and they went on to their business. Understand I am not a tree hugger but I don't kill things for giggles. I don't look at animals and want to blow them away. So what am I missing!!!!

I too am a hunter. That little Elk was doing what Elk do. If that Elk had been scared away from that area I think everything would have been OK and it would not have to have been put down.

Bare with on this, I am trying to understand this. What was the reason they put the elk down, its just not clicking in my head. Because it didn't cut the photographer to shreds it was a threat to humans.

It has been awhile, but, as I remember, the little Elk kept hanging around that area for a number of days and showed no fear of humans. Instead of scaring him away and letting nature take its course, ' they ' decided to shoot it ' just in case '. Seems like a perfectly good waste of meat because I doubt it was utilized.
